Some 1, 000 DBS customers with StarHub mobile plans will be the first in Singapore to use the NFC Mobile Payment Solution trial service for everyday mobile payments, which is set to commence in December 2010 and will last for eight months. Organized by DBS Bank, EZ-Link, Gemalto, MasterCard and StarHub, the trial will add an “N-Flex” solution enabling to turn conventional handsets into NFC-enabled mobile phone without any change to the device. The “N-Flex” solution functions on SIM cards across multiple mobile handsets hence helping to accelerate the ubiquity of handsets supporting NFC. The solution is also the first-of-its-kind conforming to the Single Wire Protocol (SWP) as endorsed by the GSM Association (GSMA). The trial will involve a group of participants who will receive an electronic mailer from either StarHub or DBS Bank that contains instructions on how to register their participation online.
Brian Hughes has been appointed Executive VP and Head of Card and Retail Services for HSBC Finance Corporation. Having been with HSBC since 2004, most recently serving as EVP, Marketing, for Card and Retail Services, he was responsible for the strategic direction and day-day-day leadership and operations of the Retail Services business and its merchant relationships. Hughes has played a key role in working effectively with the merchants on business solutions, including renegotiating many merchant and partner contracts. Prior to joining HSBC, Hughes was a Principal with Booz Allen Hamilton, where he specialized in growth strategy and marketing effectiveness.
Nexxo Financial has installed its electronic money transfer service at
19 HSBC Credit Center branches across California and Texas. The new
solution provides self-service money remittance technology to customers
in the U.S., allowing them to conduct remittance to over 21,000
locations across Latin America and Mexico of up to $1,000. Remittance
can also be sent to the HSBC “La Efectiva” ATM/Visa card for use at more
than 1,400 HSBC branches and 4,500 ATM locations across Mexico. HSBC
Bank has assets of over $557 billion providing accounts to 68 million
customers while Nexxo Financial electronic money remittance service is
available at over 100 kiosks at nearly 2,000 locations throughout
California, Arizona and Texas.
Moneris Solutions has joined with Helpforcharities.com to implement its “eSELECTplus” payment tool to facilitate online donations. Under this agreement, the Helpforcharities.com program will use Moneris’ “eSELECTplus” which allows an organization to conduct transactions quickly and easily on the Web by processing credit cards, debit cards, or ACH transactions without installing any special software. The Helpforcharities.com program provides a suite of services for online fundraising, including peer-to-peer networking tools, gift catalogs and e-card sales. The services are designed for charities, non-profits, universities, government agencies and political organizations and is PCI DSS compliant.
GE Money will offer a new private label credit card to U.S. customers of home organizing franchisor Closet Tailors. The “Closet Tailors Credit Card,” managed by GE Money’s Sales Finance unit, will be available through more than 100 franchises across the U.S. and offers a quick and easy application, sales process with promotional financing and deferred interest terms. According to surveys conducted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in 2005, garage storage alone is a $2.5 billion industry with anticipated growth of 20 % change per year through 2010.
A former HSBC card executive has taken over the controls at a small prepaid card business. Bruce Hammersley, former managing director – business development retail services for HSBC Bank, has become president and CEO of Chicago-based Civis Financial. The Company offers the “CivisCard” prepaid debit card to the unbanked and underbanked market. Civis was founded in 2001 by Ken Gay, who has been elected a vice chairman and will continue to lead the company’s operational and technology efforts. Hammersley joined Household International in 1990 and was named Director of HFC Business Initiatives in 1998. He was subsequently named CFO of Household Canada in 2000. Hammersley became Group Director of Centralized Sales and Partnerships in 2003 after Household was acquired by HSBC.
HSBC has rolled-out a loyalty rewards card with a PIN-based dual payment card option for retailers. The new “HSBC OptiPay” enables retailers to both process card transactions at a lower cost and also reward their customers with an affinity-based payment solution. The new program was created through a strategic alliance with Concept Shopping. Consumers who sign up for the merchant-branded card will be able to select from a variety of loyalty and payment options on one convenient card. During each shopping visit, cardholders will receive offers intended just for them. Shoppers will then be able to use their rewards for additional in-store purchases. HSBC Retail Services issues merchant-branded payment cards through the “Tempo Payment Network.” More than 200,000 merchant locations in the U.S. participate in the Tempo Payment Network.
Gottschalks has signed a new multi-year agreement with HSBC for the retailer’s proprietary credit card program. The partnership with HSBC has been a significant driver of sales, profit, and customer loyalty for Gottschalks. Gottschalks will also work together with HSBC Retail Services on various marketing initiatives designed to increase Gottschalks sales and further build the company’s credit card business. Gottschalks offers better to moderate brand-name fashion apparel, cosmetics, shoes, accessories and home merchandise and currently operating 60 department stores and 5 specialty apparel stores in six western states.
HSBC Credit Card Services has launched a mobile phone payments pilot, in partnership with MasterCard and ViVOtech. The six-month test will use “Near Field Communication” enabled mobile phones to make contactless credit card purchases. More than 200 HSBC employees in New York, Chicago and several other large U.S. cities used the “over-the-air” personalization process to load their HSBC credit card data onto their mobile phones. HSBC introduced contactless debit cards to its bank customers in late 2005 and contactless credit cards in 2006. About 36,000 merchant locations around the world that accept MasterCard’s “PayPass.”
HSBC has signed a new agreement with Cornerstone Brands to launch the “Territory Ahead” private label credit card program which offers 10% off the first purchase and 5% off all future card purchases.
