Visa Europe has reached critical mass for V.me by Visa acceptance in the UK. Currently, 55% of the UK’s issuance base, or 60 million cardholders plus thousands of UK’s retailers are in place to commercially rollout V.me by Visa at scale in the UK this year.

China UnionPay, the national bankcard association in China, reached a number of milestones in 2013 and is now accepted in more than 140 countries and regions and covering more than 10 million POS terminals and 1.1 million ATMs outside of China. Over 24 million UnionPay cards have been issued in about 30 overseas markets. Among major developments last year: The first UnionPay card was issued in Africa; the first time UnionPay has come into cooperation with an international tourism retail group; the first UnionPay credit card is issued in North America; the first time that CUP has cooperated with a local institution in Nigeria to expand the acceptance of UnionPay cards on a large scale; the first UnionPay debit card issued in Australia; and the first UnionPay travel card outside China is issued in Singapore.
Valitor introduced new software for contactless payment and smartphone mobile payments in cooperation with Point electronic payment solutions. The new software allows merchants to accept payments via contactless Visa cards and also via smartphones where the credit card functionality has been implemented on the SIM card. This software is the first one in Iceland to offer this kind of technical innovation, and has been certified by VISA Europe and approved by the Visa PayWave standards. All acquirers and service providers that use the merchant POS terminals VeriFone Vx820 and Vx680 from Point can update the POS terminals with this software.

Euronet Worldwide through its “Euronet Payments & Card Services (EPCS) subsidiary has been authorized by the Financial Service Authority (FSA) in the United Kingdom (UK) to provide payment services. This authorizes ATM and POS transaction acquiring and allows the Company to apply for direct membership with the major card schemes. Subsequently, Euronet already applied for and received membership with Visa and MasterCard for ATM transaction acquiring. The combination of the authorization by the FSA and membership with the major card schemes allows Euronet to directly process ATM debit and credit card transactions throughout most of Europe, without the requirement of a sponsor bank. Now EPCS is authorized to issue e-money products and provide payment services in the European Economic Area and payment and acquiring services in 29 European countries.
Ingenico payment solutions forged four year agreement with Nets merchant solutions offering its range of “Telium2” NFC payment terminals. Ingenico’s “Telium2” range of terminals ensure merchants have high security products on the market with full color customer interface and Contactless/NFC capability. The deal also incorporates a new service partnership between the two organizations.
VeriFone Systems has signed a definitive agreement with Nordic Capital Fund V to acquire Point payment and gateway services and solutions for retailers. With this, VeriFone seeks to extend the Point platform throughout the region for an infrastructure for rapid deployment of alternative payments. For the deal, VeriFone will pay EUR600 million to acquire all of the equity of Point and will also retire at closing existing Point debt of approximately EUR170 million. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of 2011, and is subject to customary closing conditions. Point has operations in 11 Northern European countries and serves a captive network encompassing almost 475,000 merchant contracts.
Point International electronic payment services joined the Secure POS Vendor Alliance (SPVA). SPVA fosters widespread compliance of existing security standards to protect cardholder information and defend merchants and acquirers against security breaches. Since its inception, the non-profit organization has united industry experts and attracted almost 20 leading payment companies that seek to have a voice within the world of secure payments. SPVA membership is open to vendors that develop secure POS payment systems or have products or solutions that interact with secure POS payment devices such as retailers, acquirers and banks.

Trustwave information security and compliance solutions has been selected by Point electronic payment service to provide Security Awareness Education (SAE) training on proper handling of payment card data and compliance validation. Trustwave SAE is a portal-based technology that provides on-demand content offering simple, efficient and easy to track employee training. Trustwave developed a custom security program for Point, which included information on payment transaction security, as well as company security awareness. The contents of the program were translated into Danish, English, Finnish, French, Norwegian, Latvian and Swedish to ensure all employees could complete the courses in their native languages for a more thorough understanding of payment security.
