Virgin America announced it will partner with Alliance Data Retail Services, which manages more than 120 private label and co-brand credit programs and is an Alliance Data Systems Corporation business, to launch a new Virgin America Visa Signature® Credit Card and a first-ever Virgin America Premium Visa Signature® Card. Both co-brand cards offer Virgin America guests and Elevate® frequent flyer program members a host of perks to make their travel experience more convenient, flexible and rewarding. Under terms of the multiyear agreement, Alliance Data will partner with Virgin America to provide a full suite of credit and marketing services for the Virgin America Visa Signature Card and will leverage its full suite of acquisition tools along with its marketing and analytics expertise to drive cardholder spend and further support one-to-one customer engagement.
Following the 10 million South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) MasterCard Debit card milestone announcement, an independent consumer survey has attributed this program as being one of the largest contributors to increasing financial inclusion in South Africa. According to FinScope South Africa 2013, South Africa’s banked population has grown 8% since 2012, with 75% (27.4 million) of the adult population now banked. The survey says the roll out of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) MasterCard Debit cards contributed 1.9 million people to the banked population in 2013. The SASSA Debit MasterCard card can be used anywhere MasterCard is accepted. Recipients can also withdraw cash at any ATM, which does however attract transaction charges. The South African Government challenged the financial sector to achieve financial inclusion of 70% in the country by 2013, with a target of 90% set for 2030.

At 30,000 ATMs, the credit union network is larger than the biggest dedicated bank network. These ATMs can not only be found on the premises of credit union branches, but in thousands of retail locations such as 7-Eleven, Walgreens and Costco. Or, if they have a debit card from their institution, they can simply turn over the card, and they will more than likely discover the red triangle logo of the network.
Online identity proofing service miiCard introduced a number of new customers within the financial services industry across a wide range of applications that collectively demonstrate the continued need and push for trust online. Named customers include Allre, Xpenditure, ClearAccount, Bittylicious, and btcQuick. Announced from the emerging payments and financial services conference Money2020, these new customers highlight miiCard’s ability to prove a consumer’s online identity to the level of an offline photo ID check, purely online and in just minutes. miiCard will verify user identity for new Bitcoin exchanges Bittylicious and btcQuick to the level of Anti-Money Laundering and Know Your Customer standards. As Bitcoin exchanges continue to move more mainstream, identity verification is a critical part of meeting these compliance standards. miiCard confirms identity and certifies official bank statements for a number of next generation banking services, including the ClearAccount overdraft protection service and expense management company Xpenditure.
MasterCard and the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) announced that there are 10 million active SASSA Debit MasterCard cards in South Africa, following the introduction of the new biometric grant payment disbursement system that commenced in March 2012. This milestone marks the conclusion of the re-registration phase of the project, with social grant beneficiaries having received their new Debit MasterCard cards with biometric functionality, issued by Grindrod Bank in association with SASSA and Net1 UEPS Technologies (Net1). Since March 2012, just under 22 million social grant beneficiaries1 have re-registered onto the new system introduced by SASSA to minimise fraudulent grant applications and collections and reduce grant administration costs by distributing all grant payments electronically. A crucial feature of the SASSA card’s biometric functionality is that it positively identifies social grant recipients using unique identifiers such as fingerprints, voice and other personal information, which means that the SASSA cards cannot be used by any person other than the approved beneficiary to collect his/her grant.
NCR Corporation designed a “virtual”, first line maintenance capability for Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) in order to maximize ATM uptime and better serve customers. The innovative service can help diagnose and resolve common ATM service opportunities significantly faster from a central help desk, without ever sending an engineer onsite. This new capability leverages BNZ’s use of NCR Predictive Services, which anticipates ATM hardware service opportunities before they occur. For BNZ, Predictive Services was a game changer and the impact was huge, as over 40 percent of BNZ’s second line hardware calls are now being resolved without disrupting customer use. BNZ saw this approach as the next stage of its ATM services operation and, together with NCR, have evolved what was initially just a concept into a complete operational solution.
Chase Card Services announced all purchases made with the United MileagePlus Explorer Card outside of the U.S. will no longer be subject to foreign transaction fees. A cardmember spending $3,000 while traveling outside of the U.S. would save $90. This enhancement adds to the other unique benefits, such as a free checked bag, priority boarding and two United Club® passes per year, that MileagePlus Explorer cardmembers already enjoy. Cardmembers and up to one traveling companion will receive their first checked bag free on United operated flights when they purchase their ticket with their card- worth up to $100 per roundtrip. Service charges for additional/oversized/overweight bags will apply. Cardmembers also board prior to general boarding, so they have earlier access to overhead space and can relax as the rest of the plane boards and earn 10,000 additional bonus miles after spending $25,000 or more on the Card each calendar year.
