INSIDE Contactless’ MicroPass(R) 4003 contactless intelligent
payment processor is now powering the “MasterCard PayPass” contactless payment
technology recently launched in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Housed in a
convenient key fob form factor and employing a unique antenna design, the
MicroPass 4003 is the first contactless payment technology introduced in
Latin America that people can use to pay their fare on public
transportation systems. Credicard MasterCard cardholders in Rio de Janeiro can use their
MicroPass-powered key fobs to quickly and easily pay at the Pao de Açúcar
(Sugarloaf Mountain) lift, Supervia train stations, UCI cinemas, McDonald’s
fast food restaurants and Estapar/Riopark parking lots throughout the city,
and will soon be able to use them at the Rio de Janeiro Metro system.
Redecard, the Brazilian acquiring company, plans to add more PayPass
merchant acceptance locations in the near future. Rio de Janeiro was chosen for the Brazil launch because of its robust
infrastructure, dynamic and young population and its appeal as a key
tourist destination; particularly from countries where PayPass is already
widely used, such as Europe, Canada and the U.S.
SMARTRAC RFID transponders has signed binding agreements to acquire the
assets of Millennium Card’s Technology (MCT), a subsidiary of On Track
Innovations contactless microprocessor-based smart card solutions, and
the machinery/inlay production intellectual property from OTI for EUR
8.5 million (approx. $12.5 million). The Parties signed a supply
agreement that will fully secure OTI’s delivery of products and projects
and SMARTRAC becomes OTI’s exclusive supplier for wire-embedded and Dual
Interface Inlays. All patent litigations and in particular all patent
infringement legal proceedings between SMARTRAC and OTI have been
ceased. SMARTRAC sees these agreements as an opportunity to strengthen
its leadership position in the global RFID inlay market, offering a
wider range of products through OTI’s production and machinery to its
manufacturing capacity. The sale of assets will significantly reduce OTI
operating expenses, which will cease to produce inlays.
Following more than one year in development, the industryâs first
full-face foil PVC card certified by Visa for contactless payment
transactions has been introduced. IL-based Perfect Plastic Printing says
its new card enables issuers to provide contactless payment cards with
the same high aesthetic appeal of foil as their traditional cards. The
card is based on INSIDE Contactless’ “MicroPass 4003.” MicroPass 4003
provides support for “Visa payWave,” including “Visa MSD 1.4.2” and
“Visa 2.0.2 Streamline Online qVSDC” standards for global
interoperability. Foil cards have attractive metalized foil applied
across the entire face of the card, offering a mirror-like reflection
unattainable with printing ink alone.
RFID inlay manufacturer SMARTRAC N.V has
received Card Quality Management (CQM) Certifications from MasterCard.
CQM is a quality program ensuring high quality standards throughout the
entire production process of MasterCard-branded products.
The CQM Label has been granted to SMARTRAC’s High Frequency card inlays,
Durable Dual Interface (DDI) Inlays as well as to the module packaging
process. With the recently awarded CQM certification, SMARTRAC’s
production processes from
chip embedding to manufacturing of the DDI and HF card inlays have
formally been verified to pursue the strict MasterCard quality
requirements for the manufacturing facility, process management,
testing, evaluation, and auditing. SMARTRAC’s High Frequency (HF) card
inlays for highly secure
ePayment cards have already been certified by MasterCard in 2006. This
certification has been renewed for all SMARTRAC HF inlays within the
NXP Semiconductors is set to launch the “IC MIFARE Plus” microcontroller
smart card. Security, performance, privacy and ease of use are at the
heart of “MIFARE Plus”. It is the only smart card IC of its class to
offer strong AES encryption for authentication, integrity and
confidentiality. Introduction of “MIFARE Plus’s” AES security avoids any
performance degradation to current infrastructure service levels. MIFARE
Plus chips comprise a number of additional security features
which, when used optimally in the infrastructure, provide a system that
prevents individuals from being identified and tracked by others.
Finally, migration planning is made easier as MIFARE Plus supports the
pre-issuance of new cards; co-existence of current and new cards; and
software based infrastructure upgrades.
