A new white paper reports that more than half of “Certified Fraud Examiners” reported witnessing a marked elevation in payments fraud and 49% reported that dollar losses also increased in the first quarter of this year. The J.P. Morgan report says fraud can be perpetrated on virtually any payment device. Despite declining check use, more fraud attempts are made on checks than any other payment type because desktop tools have made them easier to alter and the alterations more difficult to detect. Electronic payments, while a tougher challenge for criminals, are a growing threat. Databases, online information sharing and increased access points enable criminal gangs to steal, buy and sell information to carry on fraudulent activity from remote corners of the globe. The research also shows that 80% of organizations with revenues of more than $1 billion annually were victims of payments fraud in 2008 compared to 63% with annual revenues under $1 billion. Additionally, the survey shows that 14% of organizations reported attempted fraud with corporate or commercial purchasing cards.
