Gift card sales will likely continue grow at a 6% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2017. However, e-gifting which is expected to supply the next leg of growth for the gift card industry over the long-term, grew less than expected this year.
The National ATM Council U.S. Independent ATM providers and their suppliers requested MasterCard delay implementation of EMV chip card liability shifts for Maestro international cards at ATMs. The letter was co-signed by NAC and 36 member organizations including leading ATM deployers, processors and manufacturers, many of whom attended the January 29th NAC-sponsored EMV ATM Summit Meeting in Dallas. Formulation of a universally accepted AID (Application Identifier) consistent with financial transaction network routing requirements established under the Durbin Amendment to the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Also requested were adequate time is provided for the ATM industry to test and deploy the AID, and all related hardware and software upgrades and change outs necessary to render the embedded U.S. ATM base of over 425,000 terminals EMV compliant. This has created some confusion in the marketplace as to the status of the earlier announced liability shift for MasterCard’s international Maestro cards used at U.S. ATMs.
Rakuten LinkShare has completed a new round of rigorous testing on today’s most popular mobile devices and platforms including Apple iOS for iPhones and iPads. The comprehensive testing and validation of its tracking technology assures advertisers and publishers in the Rakuten LinkShare network they will be credited for mobile transactions on a variety of devices. It also enables them to develop long-term, successful partnerships that will further drive mobile and tablet sales and transactions. The testing was performed on the Apple iOS (iPhone and iPad), Android and Blackberry. The results show that advertisers are increasingly focused on m-commerce as over 500 advertisers tested within the Rakuten LinkShare network are now successfully tracking mobile transactions on one or more platforms and devices.
The Smart Card Alliance announced the newly-formed Mobile and NFC Council to raise awareness and accelerate the adoption of the numerous applications possible with NFC technology. The Council having attracted over 60 organizations and more than 120 individuals to date will take a broad industry view and bring together stakeholders in the different vertical markets that can benefit from mobile and NFC applications including payments, loyalty, marketing, promotion/coupons/offers, peer-to-peer, identity, access control and transit applications. It will provide educational resources for organizations offering or implementing NFC applications and services to foster deployment of NFC technology in the marketplace; a business-focused organization where all industry stakeholders can collaborate, network, share implementation experiences, and discuss new mobile and NFC applications; and collaborate with other organizations to discuss, define and promote standards for NFC application implementations.
