Botswana deploys high tech ATMs in a deal with Bytes Managed Solutions, Barclays and NCR. However, substantial adjustments had to be made to the ATMs for the Botswana market. Currency note templates had to be developed and then tested rigorously for correct note detection and rejection.
Retailer EDCON is deploying VeriFone “SC 5000” programmable POS PINpads nationwide in an initial deal worth $1.7 million. Prism Holdings and First National Bank have implemented the sophisticated programmable POS technology into Edgars, CNA and United Retail (Jet, Sales House, Cuthberts and Smileys) stores throughout South Africa.
Apart from supplying the initial 700 “SC 5000” PINpads, Prism has developed an integrated payment application for the terminals into Edcon’s existing POS system. Prism Holdings transaction switching entity, Prism TranSwitch Services, provides the links to the banking sector and to other systems POS infrastructure. With Edcon as a client, PTSS now switches card payment and other value-added service transactions to over 600 stores.
The Shoprite Group of Companies, Africa’s largest food retailer, has embarked on a three-year project to upgrade store equipment to EMV using “VeriFone SC 5000” programmable smart card PINpads. The US$4 million contract is being handled by Prism Holdings, an international partner of VeriFone. The “SC 5000” supports not only global smart card solutions based on the EMV specifications, but also existing magnetic stripe debit and credit cards, which are likely to remain in use for at least five to 10 more years in Africa. The “SC 5000” is PED-compliant and offers a range of security protections including tamper-detection circuitry, “VeriShield” file authentication, and the flexibility to develop and support virtually any key-management scheme.
VeriFone this morning announced that Africa’s largest food retailer, has embarked on a three-year project to upgrade store equipment to EMV using its “SC 5000” programmable smart card PINpads. The deal with the Shoprite Group of Companies is valued at $4 million. The company says this project is the largest mass installation of the “VeriFone SC 5000” programmable POS card acceptance devices in the world to date. VeriFone is working with JSE-listed Prism Holdings on the project.
