MasterCard and Habitat for Humanity officially launched the work/live initiative. WIth this, Habitat will build homes with functional living and business spaces, offering increased employment and income opportunities for low-income families. The MasterCard Center for Inclusive Growth, the arm of MasterCard focused on advancing financial inclusion, is providing a $400,000 grant to fund the construction of these work/live spaces and to increase Habitat’s capacity to replicate the model across the country.The program builds on the success of previous programs which developed the work/live model in response to community efforts related to economic development.
Vodafone and MoneyGram announced their partnership allowing consumers to transfer funds directly from around 200 countries to the millions of users of M-Pesa. The agreement will allow consumers who visit MoneyGram’s 334,000 agents across the globe to send funds directly to M-Pesa accounts. MoneyGram customers can also transfer money to an M-Pesa user through moneygram.com or via a mobile app, available on iPhone, Android and Windows 8 phones. M-Pesa – which allows customers to pay bills and withdraw, transfer and deposit money easily – is now available in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Fiji, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa and Tanzania.
The National Community Tax Coalition for community-based organizations for low-income working families, has selected NetSpend Holdings reloadable prepaid debit cards and related financial services to provide prepaid card services. NCTC’s 2,300 members provide free tax preparation service to low- and moderate-income, working families through more than 5,700 locations across the U.S. as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Novo Dia Group, a software development firm specialized in the health and human services industry, announced that 325 iPod touch devices with the Mobile Market+ point-of sale (POS) application have been deployed at 26 farmers markets in Michigan, enabling participating vendors to accept several types of benefits cards, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Women, Infants and Children (WIC), Electronic Benefits Transfer Cash Value Benefits (WIC EBT CVB), Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), and Summer EBT for Children (SEBTC). Additionally, vendors can process debit and credit card transactions with the same device, providing even more sales opportunities with no extra hardware investment. This effort is part of an initiative, making fresh produce, from farmers markets, more readily available to low-income families.
