Fujitsu and Ingenico upgraded 63 Merseyrail stations offer contactless payment in terminals and manned ticket outlets. Merseyrail has benefitted from Fujitsu’s STAR point-of-sale ticketing system for the past nine years, after it was implemented in 2005. Reducing paperwork, the system makes it easy for staff to offer a full range of products without having to refer to paper-based manuals. The Merseyside-based rail operator will retain this system, and in conjunction with Ingenico, will provide 92 iPP320 contactless PINPads and Axis, its proprietary centralised payment process solution. These contactless PINPads are fully PCI DSS compliant and were rolled-out across all Merseyrail’s manned kiosk and payment terminals at the end of last year.
Ingenico is collaborating with Fujitsu to upgrade its UK rail ticketing systems to meet the highest information security standards and improve its contactless capabilities. Ingenico is now supplying Fujitsu with around 1,400 iPP320 contactless PINPads and its proprietary centralised payment process solution, Axis, which will provide full PCI DSS compliance for all of its manned kiosk and telesales ticketing solutions. The Fujitsu STAR ticketing system is a package of services forming a comprehensive ticket retailing solution designed for UK train operators and installed in over 600 stations in the UK. To date, nine of the train operators use STAR as their preferred ticket retailing solution. Ingenico’s Axis platform manages payment transactions from the point of sale to the transaction acquirer. It complies with security requirements and even goes beyond the scope of the regulations by providing its customers with modules intended to protect them against internal fraud, the theft of sensitive data and system breakdowns.

The iSMP-based solution turns an iPod® or iPhone® into a Chip & PIN PCI approved mobile payment solution, and enables the seller to receive secure payment on-site to boost cash-flow and deliver a more convenient service to customers.
MasterCard and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) have recently signed a keystone agreement, as announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to work together in an effort to improve economic inclusion, transparency and financial formalization through the expansion of electronic payments in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The five-year public-private partnership is intended to enhance access to information and promote the transition to electronic payment services in the region, which can help reduce transaction costs and increase the efficiency of financial disbursements. Replacing cash-based systems for electronic ones also can potentially reduce leakages, increasing the likelihood that payments and benefits end up in the hands of intended beneficiaries and recipients, helping to improve the lives of the underserved.
