VeriFone Systems, Inc. announced today that taxi passengers in Philadelphia can now use Way2ride to quickly, easily and securely pay for taxi rides with a tap of their smartphones. Way2ride makes the taxi experience faster and easier for passengers in Philadelphia by enabling them to tap and pay for cab fares in 1,400 of the 1,600 taxi cabs currently operating in the city. VeriFone nominated former Sun Microsystems CEO Jonathan I. Schwartz as a board member at the company’s 2014 Annual Meeting of Stockholders scheduled for June 17, 2014. Additionally, the company announced that both Dr. Leslie Denend, a board member and current board chairman, and board member Jeff Stiefler, will not stand for re-election. If elected, current board member Alex W. (Pete) Hart will assume the role of board chairman. Schwartz has broad technology expertise, and brings extensive operational and strategic experience as a chief executive officer to the VeriFone board. He is currently president and CEO of CareZone, Inc., a mobile application for family caregivers, which he co-founded in 2010.
VX690VeriFone Systems unveiled its VX 690 EMV-capable payment terminal features Bluetooth, 3G radio and Wi-Fi connectivity for fast transactions and flexible payment capabilities. The terminal’s size, design and multiple connection capabilities meets merchants’ mPOS demands where 3G connectivity is increasingly required for payment device acceptance. The VX 690’s Bluetooth, 3G radio and Wi-Fi combination provides fast, wireless payment convenience as well as fewer dropped transactions in virtually every type of merchant environment. Dual SIM functionality enables the terminal to quickly connect to different networks to keep transactions moving, while built-in GPS allows merchants to track the location of every transaction, providing greater visibility into operations and inventory across multiple stores.
VeriFone Systems announced that Richard A. McGinn will leave the board and be replaced by long-time retail and consumer financial services veteran Jane J. Thompson, effective immediately. Thompson has successfully led multi-billion dollar organizations in the financial services, home services, retail, and ecommerce industries. She served at the executive level of Fortune 50 organizations for more than two decades. Most recently, as a strategic consultant, Thompson helped drive strategy and growth for large corporations as well as small, fast-growth businesses. She is the former president of Walmart Financial Services and former executive vice president of Sears Credit and Home Services. Thompson has also served as partner at McKinsey & Co., and in brand management and marketing at Procter & Gamble. She is a member of the board for The Fresh Market and former board member of ConAgra Foods.

VeriFone announced Moneris Solutions debit and credit card processor deployed its “VeriFone VX 520” countertop POS. The VX 520 is PCI PTS 3.X compliant and features one of the industry’s fastest processors that can quickly handle payment encryption, decryption and processing”enabling merchants to improve security and reduce transaction times. Its integrated contactless capability and all-in-one design allows merchants to accept alternative payments, such as EMV (chip and PIN) cards and mobile wallets, as well as traditional mag-stripe cards through a single device. Merchants can also use the VX 520 to support value-added applications, such as loyalty or gift card acceptance.
VeriFone Systems has been awarded a comprehensive managed payment services contract by Réseau Clubs Bouygues Telecom, the consumer retail affiliate of Bouygues Telecom, one of France’s largest fixed-mobile operators. VeriFone will provide its managed services software”PAYware Wynid”as well as helpdesk support, gateway services and VX 820 advanced PIN acceptance devices that support all types of electronic transactions. VeriFone’s VX 820 PIN pads will help Réseau Clubs Bouygues Telecom engage customers and drive revenues by delivering targeted promotional and branding messages to customers during checkout through the devices’ color touch screen. PAYware Wynid will consolidate and route all electronic payments made at each of Réseau Clubs Bouygues Telecom’s 400 retail stores through a single gateway that utilizes VeriFone’s encryption and tokenization services and is hosted in a PCI DSS validated hosting center.
VeriFone Systems announced its portable payment acceptance systems, the VX 680 and VX 675, have been deployed by e-finance to facilitate the state-sponsored transition of Egypt’s entire gasoline and petroleum products retail market to an electronic payment system. e-finance, Egypt’s first and largest payment gateway service, was awarded the modernization contract in May and has deployed one-third of an estimated 18,000 VeriFone portable payment solutions at gasoline stations throughout the country. The smart card-based system being implemented by e-finance ensures that Egypt’s Petroleum and Finance Ministries can control the quantity and value of gasoline being consumed. e-finance purchased the VX 680 and VX 675 from Systems Engineering of Egypt (SEE), VeriFone’s local distribution partner. The portable, handheld devices feature powerful processors and are designed for rugged environments where drops and spills are common and wireless connectivity options are required, enabling gasoline stations to reduce consumer wait times by quickly and reliably processing on the spot transactions, which are routed to e-finance’s gateway.
VeriFone introduced UX Solutions unattended payment devices to improve transaction security, speed and reliability for vending machines and other self-service environments, including parking meters, petroleum pumps and ticketing machines. VeriFone’s UX series of unattended payment devices enables merchants to meet growing consumer demand for self-service transactions by providing customizable payment systems that securely increase transaction volume and speed and accept payments from mobile wallets, EMV and mag-stripe cards. UX Solutions fulfills the latest security standards, including PCI PTS 3.1 and EMV Levels 1 and 2. Integrated LCD screens guide consumers through transactions and securely display payment amounts while providing merchants the ability to upsell through targeted messaging.
VeriFone announced Holiday Oil completed a chain wide rollout of its “LiftRetail” marketing solution, which uses POS-connected digital screens to engage each shopper with relevant offers and coupons. Additionally, it analyzes each item in a shopper’s basket in real-time to make the right offer to the right shopper at the right time. The result is a proven increase in sales, delighted shoppers, and empowered cashiers. Instead of relying on paper punch cards, LiftRetail tacks each shopper’s purchases by mobile number and automatically redeems their sixth coffee for free. It also customizes advertiser-funded offers to match the prices, promotions, and item availability of each retailer for a centric marketing platform funded by CPG manufacturers.
The Board of Directors of VeriFone Systems announced that it has appointed Paul Galant Chief Executive Officer and Member of the Board of Directors. Galant served as the CEO of Citigroup Inc.’s Enterprise Payments business since 2010. Galant developed innovative digital payments services for Citi’s institutional and government clients, enabling them to expand into growth markets and helping them to meet their consumers’ current and future needs for secure mobile payments and commerce. Before that, from 2009, Galant served as CEO of Citi Cards, heading Citigroup’s North American and International Consumer Credit Cards business during a period of dramatic change in the industry and positioned it for growth. From 2007, he was CEO of Citi Transaction Services, establishing the business as a core growth engine for Citi and expanding it into new product lines and markets serving Citi’s largest institutional and government clients.
