Millicom international telecommunications and media company announced its Tigo operation in Tanzania has launched the world’s first mobile money service which offers users the opportunity to automatically earn a return on their balance direct to their wallet without the need for a separate registration. The service in Tanzania is called Tigo Wekeza (“Tigo Invests”), and will allow over 3.5 million Tigo Pesa users to benefit from quarterly payments based on the balance held in their account. Tigo Pesa users in Tanzania will also have the option to nominate a non-profit beneficiary, in line with their personal cultural belief.
VeriFone Mobile Money and Airtel Africa reached an agreement to offer VeriFone Mobile Money’s merchant enablement applications for mobile Tap n Pay across their 17 operating companies in Africa. VeriFone Mobile Money’s Tap n Pay applications are a smart, secure and fast way for customers to pay, buy, bank, bill and remit money with their mobile phone at the point of sale. VeriFone Mobile Money has signed a group master agreement for the delivery of its merchant enablement solutions to Airtel Africa part of the Bharti Airtel Group of companies with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa.
Cachet Financial mobile money management partnered with Navy Federal Credit Union to implement a money management tool geared towards students. The credit union’s Visa(R) Buxx program will use Cachet’s Select Mobile(TM) Money prepaid mobile application to view balances, request money from parents through SMS, email or in-app notification, and use the locator feature to easily locate the nearest branch or ATM. Cachet’s Select Mobile Money prepaid mobile platform is a cloud-based SaaS solution that enables financial institutions to offer their prepaid cardholders a full suite of convenient financial services in one easy-to-use mobile application. Available for iOS and Android systems, the Select Mobile Money platform can be integrated with existing card programs or used to develop a new prepaid card program.
Western Union global payment services launched its mobile money transfer service to Nigeria, which increases the reach of Western Union payout options in the country. The new service to Nigeria integrates directly with Paga, the leading mobile payment platform in Nigeria, with more than 1.2 million users. Paga users now have the option of receiving a Western Union Money Transfer® transaction directly into their Paga account. Using Paga’s multi-channel platform, consumers can withdraw the money by sending it to a bank account, withdrawing from an ATM, or through Paga’s network of over 4,000 agents in Nigeria. Consumers can also choose to pick-up their funds at participating Western Union® Agent locations across the country.
Monitise has deployed and launched, with regulatory approval, its globally recognised Mobile Money platform with full access for Chinese speakers. ‘Easy TopUp’ offers a simple, secure and convenient real-time mobile service to top up PCCW-HKT pre-paid SIM cards with payment taken direct from their bank account, as opposed to purchasing vouchers from convenience stores. The green light to launch the service follows the granting of regulatory approval by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and comes as Monitise joined more than 100 British companies accompanying Prime Minister David Cameron in China on a trade mission to secure new business opportunities. The service will be supported by JETCO providing access to a real-time guaranteed source of funds through its payments switching capabilities with member banks. It is based on Monitise’s proven technology platform, which accounts for billions of transactions annually and is already used by millions of consumers around the world.

Western Union and eTranzact International multi-application and multi-channel electronic payment processing launched their mobile money transfer service. Consumers in Nigeria who use the eTranzact Mobile Money platform now have the option of receiving a Western Union Money Transfer® transaction on their mobile phones. Consumers can receive funds from money transfer transactions initiated at westernunion.com transactional websites in 23 countries, or Western Union Agent locations around the world. Subscribers can use PocketMoni, the eTranzact Mobile Money platform, to pay utility and cable television bills, make merchant payments, top-up their mobile phone credits and/or make third party transfers.
Equity Bank and Airtel Kenya have entered into a partnership that will offer comprehensive mobile commerce solutions to their customers through Airtel Money. The service, available to all Equity Bank customers with Airtel lines, will enable customers from both Airtel and Equity Bank to access Airtel mobile banking platforms, perform agency cash transactions at Equity Bank branches and also enable Airtel services customers to withdraw money at any Equity Bank countrywide. Airtel Money will also enable customers to pay their utility bills, receive bank transaction alerts, check account balance and receive mini statements, among other services. Airtel Money is fast becoming the preferred way of sending and receiving money across the Kenya and the region with customers widely using to pay utility bills such as electricity, water and pay-television subscriptions. The process is fully automated and reflects in real time providing customers with a faster and more secure mode of carrying out their transactions.
Orange is launching a quick and easy international money transfer service at a competitive price called “Orange Money International Transfer”. The offer is available between Mali, Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire. Every year, 200 million euros are moved between those three countries in the form of money transfers. With the new service, Orange meets the needs of the growing number of Orange Money customers. Orange Money International Transfer allows money to be sent and received from one’s mobile phone with complete security. Users no longer need to have cash with them when they travel, and sending cash doesn’t have to be done by a third party. All the sender needs to do is to dial #144# from his or her mobile phone, then enter the Orange telephone number of the recipient and the amount to be sent.
