A new poll finds that 96% of American women who have shopped online in the past 12 months have purchased at least one product over the Web. Most online shoppers do both their product research and shopping online while 31% do their research online and then go to a store to buy. The poll conducted by Consumer Reports National Research Center for ShopSmart magazine also found that women spend an average of 1.2 hours per week shopping online. Despite the amount of time women are spending online, one-third said they had a negative online experience. Among those women, 20% said they never got the item they ordered. Another 13% said the merchandise was very different than represented. And, 451,588 American women claimed to have had their credit card number stolen online in the last 12 months.
TX-based Fujitsu Transaction Solutions has introduced two new models in its “U-Scan” line of self-checkout systems, including the new “U-Scan Kiosk” and dual-belt “U-Scan Max.” Fujitsu will demonstrate its U-Scan Kiosk at the Retail Systems 2004 show at McCormick Place in Chicago, May 18-19, Fujitsu booth 719. The U-Scan Max self-checkout is equipped with a dual takeaway belt that enables two shoppers to use a single unit at different stages in the self-checkout process. Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fujitsu Limited and the IT “lifecycle solutions” provider for retailing technologies.
Coinstar Inc.will unveil this morning a prototype of its ‘Coinstar Shopper’ Internet platform, which enables consumers to save money and increases supermarket loyalty. At the beginning of a store visit, the consumer swipes their supermarket’s frequent shopper card, and the ‘Coinstar Shopper’ responds with special offers from the retailer, a personalized meal plan, and on-line purchases from leading non-grocery retailers on the Internet. This service enables retailers to deliver targeted messages, customized discounts, and sell additional products to consumers on their shopping trips. The ‘Coinstar Shopper’ will also allow consumers to join special grocer clubs, check their frequent shopper points balance, and receive special travel discounts. The company says there are currently more than 8,000 stores with frequent shopper programs, reaching more than 80 million consumers per week. Coinstar operates a network of more than 5,000 self service, coin counting machines in supermakets spread across 37 states.
Paymentech announced Friday it is adding EBT transaction capability to its POS offerings that will benefit smaller merchants. Paymentech says many of its merchants are smaller, independent locations using a terminal-based product instead of multi-lane platform systems. The new EBT offerings will help these merchants to cost-effectively compete against large supermarket and convenience store chains. Paymentech is launching EBT functionality on its ‘VeriFone 380’ retail solution.
