Retail e-commerce spending, excluding travel, increased 26% this holiday season versus 2005 to a record $24.6 billion. comScore Media Metrix reports that “Jewelry/Luxury Goods/Accessories” was the top gaining category in December, growing 21% for the second consecutive month to 21.9 million visitors. Other top gaining retail categories included: “Shipping,” up 19% to 34.6 million visitors; “Sports/Outdoor,” up 15% to 32.6 million visitors. “Retail-Food” was up 11% to 17.2 million visitors; “Computer Hardware” up 9% to 66 million visitors; and “Apparel,” up 8% overall to 61.9 million visitors. In December, Yahoo! Sites retained its number one ranking with more than 131 million unique visitors.

The ECML alliance, announced yesterday (CardFlash 6/14), indicated it intends to transfer management responsibilities for the new ECML digital wallet standard to a recognized standards body where it can be maintained and promoted. The new universal format for e-commerce digital wallets was endorsed Monday by America Online, American Express, Compaq, CyberCash, IBM, MasterCard, Microsoft, SETCo, Sun Microsystems, Transactor Networks, Trintech, and VISA. Initial online merchants supporting ECML include Beyond.com, Dell Computer Corp., fashionmall.com, healthshop.com, Nordstrom.com, Omaha Steaks, Reel.com, and 1-800-Batteries.The format, known as Electronic Commerce Modeling Language (ECML), utilizes a set of uniform field names that streamlines the process by which merchants collect electronic data for shipping, billing and payment. The specification is available to merchants at www.ecml.org.
A new single standard for electronic wallets will reportedly receive widespread support this week from VISA, MasterCard, Microsoft, IBM, AOL and Sun. The new technical standard, ‘ECML’, or electronic commerce modeling language, will store credit card payment data in either the Web browser or on an Internet server. Electronic wallets enable Web shoppers to speed through the Website checkout process by eliminating the need to re-enter credit card numbers and personal information. Proprietary electronic wallets have been largely unsuccessful at gaining broad market support.
