The campaign by retailers to prod the card networks and banks to move to total Chip & PIN in the U.S. and away from Chip & SIG is gaining more traction. A group of nine attorneys general dispatched a letter to the nation’s top credit card companies and banks.
The chorus to discard signatures for EMV and go to PIN transactions is growing. FBI that new chip-based credit cards are safer than traditional cards but still vulnerable to fraud and need to be used with a PIN instead of a signature to minimize risk.
The National Retail Federation (NRF) blasted the EMV migration noting small businesses should not be pressured to install the equipment to accept them at the expense of more effective technology. The NRF told Congress that new chip-and-signature credit cards without a PIN will not stop data breaches.
