INSIDE Contactless contactless secure transaction chip technologies has completed the acquisition of Atmel Corporation’s Secure Microcontroller Solutions (SMS). INSIDE paid $32 million in cash after an adjustment based on the working capital of the transferred business at the closing on September 30, subject to an additional cash consideration of up to $21 million if certain earn-out targets are met in 2010 and 2011. The agreement also provides INSIDE a royalty-based, intellectual property license agreement to support current and future SMS products. In addition, INSIDE entered into a multi-year supply agreement to continue sourcing wafers from the fabrication facility in Rousset, France that Atmel recently sold to LFoundry GmbH.

HID & INSIDE Launch Secure mNFC Application

HID Global ID security and INSIDE Contactless open-standard contactless chip technologies have inked agreements to introduce the “iCLASS” access control and ID credentials for NFC mobile phones. Delivered on the HID Global “Trusted Identity Platform” system, the “iCLASS” virtual credentials for NFC mobile phones allows for the substitution of numerous plastic cards for a variety of commercial and consumer identity applications. This pertains to physical access control, secure PC log on, time and attendance monitoring, equipment and material checkout, authorized access to office equipment and manufacturing machinery, private label retail payments, prepaid transit passes, and customer loyalty and membership programs. INSIDE is in the process of updating its microread NFC controller to implement the command set and protocol that will allow it to communicate with HID iCLASS readers, and iCLASS support will be a feature of all the companyâs future NFC products.

INSIDE Contactless delivered its first dual-interface debit card solution compliant with the Interac “Flash” specification. Scotiabank debit cards based on the INSIDE solution and TD Merchant Services’ POS terminals have already been used to perform the “Flash” transactions. The Scotiabank debit cards use INSIDE’s” micropass 6008″ dual-interface payment microprocessor with the resident Interac Flash application. Interac is responsible for the development and operations of the Interac national payment network, allowing Canadians to access their money through automated banking machines and POS terminals.

INSIDE Contactless and card producer CPI Card Group have received type approval from Discover Financial Services for mobile payment stickers based upon INSIDE’s “MicroPass 4002” contactless payment processor. The MicroPass 4002 chip became the first Discover-certified Zip implementation on the market in 2007. These Discover stickers combine the MicroPass 4002 with a uniquely tuned RF antenna in a compact prelam that features an innovative shielding design that improves performance in payment sticker applications. The shielding protects the chip and antenna inside the sticker from interference that might be caused by the metals and radio signals within mobile phones and other electronic devices.
The stickers are delivered already pre-cut from ID1 card devices and pre-personalized to allow for personalization and fulfillment using traditional card processing equipment.
Incorporating the Discover Zip payment application, the certified stickers contain all the functionality of a traditional Discover credit, debit or prepaid card, and enable Discover card issuers to offer their customers the additional convenience of using their mobile phones or other portable devices to make contactless payments anywhere using the Discover Zip standard.

MasterCard Deploys Next-Generation Mobile Payment Sticker

They will be delivered from CPI already pre-cut from ID1 card devices and pre-personalized to allow for personalization and fulfillment using traditional card processing equipment. The new m-payment sticker offers advanced adhesive backing, which adheres to mobile phones better, and can be removed and reapplied multiple times without losing its grip. INSIDE Contactless is making the Open NFC protocol stack more widely
available, placing the full source code and full API documentation on
SourceForge.net for free download. The source code for the core Open NFC
version 3.5 software â including Android, Windows Mobile, Linux and Java
(JSR-257) editions â and API documentation will be available on
SourceForge.net starting May 15. The Open NFC protocol stack brings
proven, high quality, well-documented NFC software into the open source
arena, providing a complete NFC middleware solution for mobile phones,
embedded products and other devices. It benefits device makers, software
developers as well as others in the mobile ecosystem in several ways,
providing greater impetus to implement NFC solutions across a broad
range of consumer products. This move extends INSIDEâs software stack as
the de facto open solution for NFC enablement on mobile devices.

INSIDE Contactless’ MicroPass(R) 4003 contactless intelligent
payment processor is now powering the “MasterCard PayPass” contactless payment
technology recently launched in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Housed in a
convenient key fob form factor and employing a unique antenna design, the
MicroPass 4003 is the first contactless payment technology introduced in
Latin America that people can use to pay their fare on public
transportation systems. Credicard MasterCard cardholders in Rio de Janeiro can use their
MicroPass-powered key fobs to quickly and easily pay at the Pao de AÃÂ§ÃÂºcar
(Sugarloaf Mountain) lift, Supervia train stations, UCI cinemas, McDonald’s
fast food restaurants and Estapar/Riopark parking lots throughout the city,
and will soon be able to use them at the Rio de Janeiro Metro system.
Redecard, the Brazilian acquiring company, plans to add more PayPass
merchant acceptance locations in the near future. Rio de Janeiro was chosen for the Brazil launch because of its robust
infrastructure, dynamic and young population and its appeal as a key
tourist destination; particularly from countries where PayPass is already
widely used, such as Europe, Canada and the U.S.
