TX-based Wincor Nixdorf is now offering the Intel “Pentium III 1.26GHz” and Intel “Celeron 1.2GHz” processors to the standard list of options for its “BEETLE” family of POS systems. The new processors offer retailers maximum performance for their point-of-sale systems. Papa John’s International has selected Wincor Nixdorf’s “BEETLE/NetPOS” POS terminals as its next generation hardware platform for its 2,794 restaurants. The BEETLE /NetPOS configuration includes the Linux operating system for a lower total cost of ownership and maximum performance, and a Wincor Nixdorf touch screen for operator ease of use. Papa John’s selected Wincor Nixdorf because of the company’s proven expertise with Linux and its ability to assist Papa John’s in migrating its text-based application to a GUI-based, touch-screen version designed to increase user efficiency and reduce training time.
Wincor Nixdorf unveiled a solution to enable retailers to migrate from legacy “IBM 46xx” hardware to Wincor’s “BEETLE” POS system, while retaining their investment in “4690” application software and peripherals. The Wincor middleware provides an emulation of the 4690 OS system services. The migration platform is transparent to the POS application, so that the application is unaware of the device layer, middleware and host operating system. The Wincor-hosted terminal application integrates seamlessly with the existing 4690 controller, responding to controller directives and inquiries as if it were a 4690 POS terminal.
Wincor Nixdorf said this morning that Burlington Coat Factory is deploying an additional 2,900 “BEETLE/S” POS systems at its stores nationwide, for a total of approximately 5,000 “BEETLEs” installed throughout the chain. The additional “BEETLEs”, when the rollout is finished in late summer, will run “Red Hat Linux” and will be deployed in all of Burlington’s current locations. The “BEETLE/S” systems configured for Burlington are sealed-chassis POS appliances with external power supplies and heat sinks rather than internal fans for heat dissipation. There are 600,000 “BEETLE” family installations to-date.
