Ten payment service providers have now committed to MasterCard “PayPass,” part of PayPass Wallet Services, to subsequently up the number of merchants able to accept wallet payments online and on mobile. The payment service providers, including CQR, CreditCall, DataCash, MoPowered, Optimal Payments, Pensio, Sage Pay, SecureTrading, The Logic Group and WorldPay, agreed to integrate with the scheme, which enables more online and multi-channel retailers to have the tools available in order to capitalise on the growing online and mobile commerce market. Integrating PayPass Online into eCommerce sites allows merchants to speed the checkout process, helping to reduce the number of abandoned shopping carts, and shoppers can easily access all their payment and shipping information.

DBS, EZ-Link and MasterCard, StarHub unveils NFC app “SmartWallet” secure digital wallet service. StarHub, DBS and EZ-Link are part of the consortium which received IDA’s NFC Call for Collaboration award in October 2011, to develop an interoperable mobile NFC infrastructure and mobile payment services in Singapore. StarHub’s SmartWallet will allow its mobile customers to enjoy the convenience of using three contactless payment cards on an NFC enabled smartphone – DBS One.Tap, NFC ez-link purse and NFC FEVO Pre-paid MasterCard. SmartWallet will offer users a virtual DBS MasterCard PayPassTM card called One.Tap. With just one tap of the smartphone, customers can pay for goods or services quickly and securely at more than 20,000 DBS and MasterCard PayPass merchant partners in Singapore. Existing DBS cardmembers can apply for One.Tap at any time through DBS Internet or mobile banking.
Identive Group identification, security and RFID launched its “tomPAY” radio frequency identification (RFID) peel & stick tag that allows payment card manufacturers to offer contactless payment capabilities using consumers’ existing mobile devices. Showcased at the NFC Solutions Summit in Burlingame, California, “tomPAY” is based on Identive’s “tom” (tag on metal) smart inlay technology and features a unique peel and stick form factor that allows it to be manufactured using the same processes as an ISO PVC card, and then popped out of the card and affixed to a mobile phone. It allows contactless mobile payments in compliance with MasterCard “PayPass” specifications and also can be used for loyalty or other schemes. Additionally, tomPAY can be adapted to support EMV-compliant (SDA/DDA) chips, opening new opportunities for card makers and issuers to provide their customers with an EMV-enabled tap-and-go experience.
Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) is now implementing Cetrel, SIX Card Solutions’ competence center for credit card processing, to offer a flexible and technologically innovative platform. It will implement support by SIX Card Solutions to offer the first contactless credit card in the market. SIX Card Solutions previously developed a prepaid card program in Austria and Germany for Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI). This innovative solution enables cardholders to profit from special functions, including PIN selection, personal card design, secure paying on the Internet and balance inquiries per SMS. RBI also uses the SIX Card Solutions system to issue credit cards with a miles function for Air Berlin & NIKI.
MasterCard Worldwide introduced its ‘Eat, Drink and Be Generous’ campaign dedicated to making every penny count in the fight against cancer to raise funds for research supported by the Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) charitable initiative. Every time cardholders use their MasterCard cards when dining out from now through September 1st, MasterCard will make a penny donation on each transaction, up to $4 million total, to SU2C. Qualifying purchases include a cup of coffee or a quick meal to ordering take out and fine dining. The program works to accelerate the pace of groundbreaking collaborative research in order to bring new cancer treatments to patients quickly and save lives, for which online and in-restaurant materials, web banner ads, statement inserts and ATM messaging through MasterCard bank partners will help raise awareness and promote.
China UnionPay (UnionPay) and MasterCard Worldwide recently signed a Payment Gateway Service Agreement, allowing MasterCard e-commerce platform to accept UnionPay Cards. Both UnionPay and MasterCard will cooperate to configure their respective systems to equip the MasterCard Payment Gateway with the ability to process transactions made using UnionPay Cards for e-commerce merchants outside of mainland China. UnionPay and MasterCard announced that both parties also signed an Addendum to extend the term of their existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the establishment of a mutually beneficial relationship to explore future business development. The Addendum and Payment Gateway Service Agreement reinforces UnionPay and MasterCard’s cooperation to provide more efficient and value-added services for cardholders.
The MasterCard qualified “PersevalPRO Issuer” test tool that meets its latest card personalisation validation (CPV) requirements has been brought to market by Fime and Barnes International in a joint initiative. The test tool allows issuers to prepare for the MasterCard CPV certification process to reduce time to market. Eliminating costly and time consuming issues arising during the final certification stage, the “PersevalPRO Issuer” is the culmination of FIME integration services for secure chip based applications, tokens and devices and Barnes International’s chip card test tools. The product incorporates card personalisation functionality and security requirements issued by MasterCard and is the first to achieve qualification from the payment system.
Currently, 62% of Americans who use a mobile phone would be open to using their device to make purchases wherever their errands may take them, particularly, 18-34 year-olds. With 63% of 18-34 year olds at ease using mobile phones to make purchases versus the 37% of those 35 or older, 65% feel more naked without their phones than their wallets, compared to only 34% of the elder group. These findings, according to the latest survey by MasterCard Worldwide, also indicate more men than women (51% vs. 40%) would be at ease using it to make purchases; 49% vs. 45% would be more impressed by someone who paid a bill with a mobile application than with a credit card; women more so than men (50% vs. 36%) feel more exposed without their mobile device than their wallets; while 45% vs. 34% would rather have their phones than their wallets ‘surgically attached.’ Across the board, however, 54% agree someone’s phone is more telling of their personality than their wallet.
MasterCard Worldwide announced Ajay Bhalla has been appointed president of DataCash-which MasterCard acquired in 2010- and will now be responsible for all of MasterCard’s Commerce Gateway Services. Bhalla will provide leadership and management for MasterCard’s global end-to-end Gateway processing solutions organizations and the associated DataCash Fraud Tool and Risk Management services. He will be responsible for the profitability of the business, the operations and ongoing business integration, as well as developing the long-term vision, strategies and marketing plans that support global market expansion through new channels and service offerings. Bringing with him over 20 years’ experience in the financial services industry, Bhalla joined MasterCard in 1992 and most recently served as division president for South East and South Asia (SESA) where he introduced PayPass and helped develop the MasterCard Titanium card.
MasterCard and Brighter Planet introduced a joint program to make carbon emissions analysis easier for the businesses worldwide that use MasterCard corporate cards, in response to the nearly 80% of companies expressing an interest in green travel initiatives. The MasterCard “Carbon Emissions Reporting” feature represents the first time that automatic reporting and analysis of estimated travel-related carbon emissions data will be available to corporate cardholders based on their card transactions. The “Carbon Emissions Reporting” program provides access to new data that is increasingly valued by companies as they strive to benchmark sustainability goals and initiatives, confront sustainability standards on their supply chains, and address the environmental concerns of stakeholders. Brighter Planet provides business intelligence for a sustainable future and was recently named 2010’s “Best Small Business” by Discovery Channel’s Treehugger.
Oberthur secure technologies, has reinforced its link with OTP Bank, the largest financial institution in Hungary, to provide contactless payment city cards to the citizen of Pecs. The citizen card is an international banking card usable not only for payment but also for other transactions. It is accepted by the 150 million merchants in the Maestro ecosystem. The card is issued in a prepaid format and can easily be refilled through the Internet or with cash in an OTP Bank branch.
