First Data Corporation electronic commerce and payment processing and SunTrust Banks renewed their merchant services partnership, SunTrust Merchant Services. The joint venture currently serves more than 67,000 merchant locations and processes more than $29 billion in card volume every year. First Data will continue managing day-to-day operations, risk management and merchant sales activities, while SunTrust will continue to build upon the growth of the business through its client-facing channels, including its retail branch network of more than 1,650 locations throughout the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions and wholesale-relationship sales force. First Data also provides SunTrust signature debit, credit, prepaid and commercial card processing, fraud prevention and detection, and card production services.
The STAR network is now the preferred provider of PIN-secured debit POS and ATM access for OH-based Kemba Credit Union while First Data is to supply its debit processing. STAR offers electronic funds transfer (EFT) networks nationwide with more than 2 million retail and ATM locations and is a First Data company. Kemba serves more than 60,000 members in the Greater Cincinnati area, has more than $468 million in assets, issues 37,000 debit cards and operates 10 ATMs. The STAR Network focuses on real-time debit payment processing for driving increased reliability, security, cardholder convenience, and choice wherever and whenever consumers demand access to their money.
First Data 2Q/10 consolidated revenue was up $2.6 billion was up 18% since the year ago period thanks in great part to the Bank of America Merchant Services alliance. Adjusted revenue was $1.6 billion, up 4% thanks to merchant acquiring growth in the Retail and Alliance Services segment, while EBITDA was $513 million, compared with $589 million in the second quarter of 2009. Retail and Alliance Services segment revenue for the first quarter was $737 million, up 7%, while transaction growth was 9% and segment EBITDA was $249 million, compared to $265 million in 2Q/09. For the quarter, the net loss attributable to First Data was $171 million.

First Data Corporation’s STAR Network has signed a multi-year agreement with top-ten debit
card issuer SunTrust Banks to provide PIN-secured debit point-of-sale (POS) and ATM access
to its cardholders. Through the merchant
processing alliance, SunTrust can offer a full suite of electronic
payment products and services including credit, debit, check, and gift
card programs to its business customers throughout the Southeastern
United States. First Data provides signature debit and credit card processing and
production to SunTrust, as well as merchant processing services to the
bankâs business and commercial customers. As of March 31, 2010,
SunTrust had total assets of $171.8 billion and total deposits of $118.7
billion and operates an extensive branch and ATM network
throughout the high-growth Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states and a full
array of technology-based, 24-hour delivery channels.
First Data’s “STAR Network” has become the first EFT network to launch, load and reload support for “STAR”-branded general purpose prepaid cards. The expanded transaction set includes activation, load/reload and split tender purchases â with PIN-security and the associated reduction in fraud built in. The new “STAR RELOAD” service icon denoting load/reload card capabilities will be displayed with the “STAR” brand on participating cards, merchant POS and ATM locations. The “STAR Network” has supported general purpose prepaid programs with PIN-secured ATM and POS transactions, and with its biller-direct payment service for many years. “STAR” has more than 2 million retail and ATM locations in the USA.
