While early “clear” payment cards encountered operating problems with ATMs, 3M this week unveiled the first truly transparent, fully ATM-functioning payment card. The new infrared “Vikuiti Clear Card Filter” passes all international standards for payment cards. VISA International recently approved 3M as a manufacturer of a transparent inlay for use in VISA-branded payment cards worldwide. Although the magnetic stripe shows through the front of the card, it can easily be integrated into the design. Typography, solids, patterns, illustrations all reproduce well on the clear plastic substrate and it accepts traditional four-color printing in addition to a wide range of translucent inks. The card is powered by a proprietary multi-layer, IR light-blocking optical film from 3M. Laminated between two clear sheets of PVC, the film reflects the IR light generated by LEDs used in ATMs to detect the presence of a card.
3M Touch Systems announced the availability of “MicroTouch ToughTouch II” capacitive touch screens for ruggedized self-service kiosks and ATM applications. “ToughTouch II” is a highly responsive, reliable touch screen, but with a much higher level of impact resistance against breakage from accidental or malicious activity. “ToughTouch II” is 3M’s most rugged capacitive touch product and its construction combines a “MicroTouch ClearTek II” capacitive touch screen with a 4mm glass layer optically laminated to the back.
3M has introduced the “3M Library System”, an automated checkout and fine and fee payments solution, at the American Library Association’s annual Mid-Winter Meeting. 3M Library Systems will offer a basic fines and fees self-pay option that allows for payment with credit or debit card and a flexible option, an automated payment machine that accepts paper currency and change. “3M SelfCheck Systems,” introduced in 1992, pioneered the field of automated library collection management and circulation functions. “3M SelfCheck Systems” employ radio frequency identification technology and/or bar codes to process the checkout and return of collection items. “3M Library Systems” provides security, productivity and information management solutions.
