CardWeb.com’s CardExecs database of card industry movers and shakers today features Steven Laub, President and Chief Executive Officer of Atmel. The Company specializes in the design and manufacture of microcontrollers, capacitive touch solutions, advanced logic, mixed-signal, nonvolatile memory and radio frequency (RF) components.
Cypress Semiconductor announced Ezetap mPOS solutions is using Cypress’s “CapSense Express” controllers in the world’s first capacitive-touch-based PIN-pad in its new MPOS device. The CY8CMBR2016 matrix keypad solution provides the Ezetap MPOS device with a durable user interface, helping it to pass all of the stringent EMVCo and PCI global certifications required for PIN entry devices. Consumer electronics and home appliances have rapidly been transitioning from mechanical buttons to capacitive touch controls. The EMV and PCI certifications are extremely strict due to the need to protect customer PINs against a broad range of attacks, while ensuring compatibility across a range of payment cards. Ezetap was able to go from concept, to certification, to manufacturing in less than a year.
Wincor Nixdorf AG is pooling its software and professional services expertise in Utrecht in the Netherlands. Wincor Nixdorf CEO Eckard Heidloff officially opened the new Software Headquarters on September 18, 2013 in the presence of Remco van Lunteren, Member of the Provincial Executive of the Province of Utrecht. Wincor Nixdorf aims to build on its software strength and is already generating revenue of more than EUR300 million in the software sector. Around 50 employees from Wincor Nixdorf will initially start work in the office complex in Utrecht from October 1; the addition of further staff is also planned. Software for banks and retail companies Banks and retail companies worldwide are striving to make their branch and store processes leaner and more automated. Banks and retailers tend to use non-standardized software. Wincor Nixdorf therefore sees great opportunities in this for offering standard software to handle all the self-service and branch or store processes, irrespective of the hardware installed. Functional enhancements can thus be added quickly and cost-effectively.
UL is pleased to announce that the Collis Brand Test Tool, developed by UL’s Transaction Security team, has passed qualification by MasterCard for its new ATM module. The last couple of years, terminals with motorized readers became smarter detecting possible fraud. For that reason it became more and more difficult to let them accept a wired probe during testing. Our new solution comes with programmable cards for motorized readers. The cards will be personalized in a few seconds to behave exactly like a formal MasterCard or Visa test card. Subsequently, the test case from the scheme’s test plans will be executed, exactly in the way the Collis Brand Test tool users are used to. Logging from the card will be read and included in the verdict of the test. The tool will provide the same outstanding level of step-by-step guidance to the user.
Acquirer Systems announced MasterCard Worldwide has qualified the Acquirer Systems Personalisation Validation Toolkit, Pivot, against their most recent card personalization requirements. QUORiON plans to introduce the POS Concerto as a new POS hybrid, because it combines both touch screen and classical keyboard. Touch screen based POS systems therefore virtually eliminate entry errors, because users can select from clearly defined menus. These menus constitute a finite number of options, thereby providing the user with a step-by-step procedure to guide them to their goal. It is therefore no surprise that touch screen POS systems are so popular in restaurants and bars. POS keyboards withstand every day retail abuse, because they are constructed of durable, spill resistant materials, as opposed to the standard PC keyboard. QUORiON’s POS Concerto supplies value as a retail POS system or in hybrid point of sale applications such as coffee shops. It’s strength lies in its seamless combination of tested POS technologies – the touch screen and POS keyboard.
National Semiconductor introduced a 16-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) featuring a single-wire interface and 4-to-20 mA current loop drive that simplifies the design of smart transmitters used in industrial two-wire sensor systems. The highly integrated DAC161P997 reduces component count and cost in factory and building automation control systems by enabling the use of a single isolation component to cross the isolation boundary. For sensing and detecting applications where galvanic isolation is not required, National’s DAC161P997 interfaces directly to a microcontroller. It has a single-wire interface: enables higher system accuracy compared to discrete PWM implementations, and lower system cost compared to 4-wire SPI solution; Low power operation: 190 uA enables total system power consumption below 30 mW or 3.5 mA; and a user-programmable start up and data rate auto detect.
