5.2 Billion Smart Cards Shipped in 2009

In 2009, 5.2 billion microcontroller and memory-based smart cards shipped into applications such as SIM cards, payment and banking, government ID, and transportation. The IC market for the year was valued at $1.7 billion, according to the latest metrics from ABI Researchâs Smart Card Market Data. Gemalto maintained as the number one manufacturer, with an estimated 33.8% market share, while Morpho (previously Sagem Orga) gained the most market share (up 1.8%) to consolidate its fourth position. Meanwhile, with 26.3%, Infineon continued to account for the most revenue among the IC manufacturers while in unit terms, Samsungâs strong position in SIM cards saw it capture 34% of IC volumes. The ABI Research âSmart Card Market Dataâ forecasts show that the market is ready to grow, both in terms of card volumes and IC revenues.

Eurosmart General Assembly gathering in Munich unanimously elected a new Bureau, which is mandated by the Steering Committee to ensure the day-to-day management of the Association and to ensure the efficient implementation of decisions. The members include:
Marc Bertin (Oberthur Technologies), reelected Chairman for a second mandate; Oyvind Rastad (Gemalto) and Thomas Froschmeier (Giesecke & Devrient) newly elected Vice-Chairmen and Dr. Helmut Gassel (Infineon), reelected as Treasurer for a third mandate. Bruno Dupont as Secretary General is also part of the Bureau but with no voting right.
Eurosmart Chairman underlined 2009 key achievements to promote the Smart Security Industry and delivered a vision for future developments.
Among the priorities for 2010, the General Assembly decided to launch a new Task Force on Biometry to elaborate a vision of the Biometric technology state of the art and best use cases, as well as technical choices of implementation when in combination with Smart card technology. The approach of the Task Force will be to explain Biometrics and its applications; To develop a vision on the “Internet of Things”: a digitalized world will require more security, as well as privacy and data protection; to strengthen the mission of education through high level trainings on the latest innovative ICTs, starting with Machine-to-Machine sessions; to keep promoting interoperability and European standards and to improve security certification by pushing for the convergence of certification schemes and developing guidelines on security levels.

INSIDE, Sagem Orga and TazTag Test NFC mPayment

About the size of an ordinary credit card, the “TazCard” Java-based handheld device is capable of supporting a variety of NFC applications and has been facilitated with INSIDEâs Java-based test payment application. This all on a Single Wire Protocol (SWP)-enabled SIM card developed by Sagem Orga, which is connected to the INSIDE MicroRead NFC controller built into the TazCard. The TazCard also utilizes INSIDEâs Open NFCâ¢ protocol stack. With its 3.5-inch color touch screen, the TazCard is able to provide the user with a full NFC experience for payment and other NFC transactions. INSIDEâs third-generation MicroRead NFC chip provides the most mature NFC implementation.

Sagem Orga Presents Wireless LAN SIM Card

Smart card solution provider Sagem Orga will present the worldâs first Wireless LAN SIM card at
the international CTIA Wireless show in Las Vegas. “ConnectSIM” brings both new freedom
and security for mobile phone users. The flexibility of a wireless LAN
connection can now be enjoyed with any mobile phone â combined with the
high security of a SIM card. The WLAN SIM card can be used in any mobile
phone to enable fixed-mobile convergence, proximity transactions,
trusted peer-to-peer operations between two SIM cards, strong
authentication services, WEB security and a large and varied set of
other use cases. Some of the most interesting use cases will be
demonstrated by Sagem Orga at the CTIA.

INSIDE Contactless Pilots The NFC Cosyphone

“Cosyphone”
commercially available NFC
handset. INSIDEâs core NFC offerings, the “MicroRead” NFC

client software are working together to enhance the user experience
for the “Cosyphone.” Aimed at the over 50âs market, the “Cosyphone” enables users to make
calls, send text messages or access data services such as weather or
traffic information simply by waving the phone near an NFC tag or smart
poster without having to navigate through more cumbersome menus.
With INSIDEâs Wave-Me technology in the “Cosyphone,” waving the device
at a poster automatically simulates a complex series
of keystrokes, eliminating awkward, time-consuming, multi-keystroke
chores.

The CARTES & IDentification Conference to the Sesames Awards and the
high numbers at the stands, visitor numbers hit 19,883, up from 19,752
in 2008, 68% of whom were from abroad (63% in 2008). Next year’s show has been slated for December 7th to 9th. Representing 146 countries (132 in 2008), the trade show confirmed its international
influence with 427 exhibitors, 78% of whom were from outside France.
Furthermore, the 18 conferences on offer over the three days welcomed
1,228 delegates, 85% of whom were from outside France. IDentification,

Ingenico’s consolidated revenue for the second quarter declined 3% at constant exchange rates to 175.7 million euros, compared to the prior year quarter. Revenue declined in all regions except China/Asia, up 71%, and Latin America, up 7%. In Latin America the increase was driven by good performance in Brazil and Mexico. In China/Asia-Pacific the solid increase was attributable to Australia, China, and the consolidation of Landi in the Group perimeter. On June 30th, Ingenico completed the disposal of Sagem Denmark and Manison Finland to BBS, a provider of electronic ID, payment and information solutions in the Nordics. The disposal, which is combined with a strategic partnership for the distribution by BBS of IngenicoÃ¢ÂÂs Telium-based terminals in this region, allows Ingenico to reinforce the group financial structure. North American Smart Payment Card Shipments Double

Shipments of payment smart cards to North America doubled last year. Also, open-platform is gaining ground and now represents 15% of
all global shipments, a 72% increase compared to 2007. The Smart Payment Association’s “2008 Global Payment Card Market Survey” reports that more than 580 million payment smart cards were delivered by its members last year, a 39% growth rate over the prior year driven by EMV deployments. The SPA members are Gemalto, Giesecke & Devrient, Oberthur Technologies and Sagem Orga. Both dual interface and pure contactless cards confirm SPA’s expectations, outperforming the market with year-on-year growth rates of 140% and 66% respectively. DDA technology is continuing to gain importance, with 69% growth year-on-year, representing 25% of SPA members’ shipments in 2008. Migration to DDA has started worldwide and both Visa and MasterCard mandate that all cards should support DDA by 2011 in Europe.

Following its acquisition of XPonCard, the Oberthur Technologies
smartcard manufacturer has closed the gap to hold nearly a 1% market
share less than the 2nd place Giesecke & Devrient. Following a year of
record sales, G&D has maintained its position as the second largest
manufacturer of smart cards globally behind market leader Gemalto.
Gemalto as the market leader accounted for more than
the next three companies combined with growth into service areas and its
pending acquisition of NXP Semiconductors’ Mobile Services Business
extension to further penetrate the contactless/NFC market. IMS market
research offers consultancy services on a wide range of global
electronics markets, regularly publishing research on Financial
technologies and ID Technologies in NFC, mobile financial services, SIM
cards, smart cards, payment cards and contactless/RFID applications.

Norway’s BBS Acquires Two Ingenico Units

Norway-based BBS has acquired Sagem Denmark and Manison Finland from Ingenico. The two firms generated at total of $54 million in annual revenues. As part of the deal BBS will distribute Ingenico’s “Telium”- based terminals in the Nordic region. BBS is owned by Nordic banks and offers a wide range of payment services. BBS has annual revenues of about $264 million. Ingenico notes that the disposal of these two companies acquired is part of the transaction of Sagem Monetel. The closing of the transaction should take place in the next 60 days.
