2C2P payment services provider and Myanmar Citizens Bank launched the Citizen Card, a reloadable prepaid card accepted by MasterCard merchants globally. Supply of the Citizen’s Card will be limited to 5,000 units. Citizen Card can be obtained at any MCB branch in Myanmar. It is also available via the MCB website by filling out an online form. Cardholders will enjoy special benefits with merchant partners, in addition to waived sign-up fees. Existing cardholders can add value to their Citizen Card at any MCB outlet, with more top up options rolling out in 2015. According to McKinsey & Co, Myanmar is expected to quadruple the size of its economy from US$45 billion to over US$200 billion by 2030, with per capita GDP rising from US$1,300 in 2010 to $5,100 by 2030.

C-SAM m-wallet and MasterCard announced a global strategic partnership, as well as a minority investment by MasterCard. C-SAM provides the end-to-end infrastructure required to operationalize a mobile wallet. This includes back-end management infrastructure, software development kits and on-device software that support secure proximity near field communications (NFC), bar code, QR code and cloud-based transactions. Leveraging the MasterCard digital payment infrastructure including PayPass Wallet Services, C-SAM will be able to significantly enhance its current offering.
Maybank Singapore’s latest mobile banking app is running on Tagit’s proprietary Mobeix platform. Maybank’s mobile banking application suite offers customers account inquiries, bill payments and online funds transfers on-the-go via their mobile devices. PayPal plans to double the number of employees in Asia Pacific from 1,000 currently to
more than 2,000 by the end of the year. The company plans to add more
than 100 new jobs at its international headquarters in Singapore.
PayPal processed more than $6 billion of total payment volume in Asia
Pacific in 2009, an increase of 38% from 2008. Since its
establishment in the region in 2006, the company has struck dozens of
strategic partnerships with Asian companies including announcements
today with DBS, Singaporeâs largest bank, and China UnionPay, Chinaâs
bankcard association. PayPalâs new international headquarters
in Suntec City, Singaporeâs technology hub in the middle of the nationâs
central business district represents all of PayPalâs business outside of the USA.
The Western Union Company has certified two participants in its Mobile
Vendor Program: India-based mChek and South Africa-based Fundamo.
WU has also selected mobile value added solution provider Comviva as a new
participant in the program. The Mobile Vendor Program is intended to
extend the reach and accessibility of Western Union Money Transfer
services to mobile finance initiatives in Latin America, Africa, the
Middle East and Asia. mChek and Fundamo are the first to be certified
in Western Union’s program. Fundamo’s Enterprise Mobile Financial
Services platform is designed for configuration to
evolve with the needs of mobile subscribers wih 40 deployments in over
30 countries, most of which located in Africa and the Middle East.
mChek offers a hosted service for Mobile Money
Transfer and secure payments using credit cards, debit cards, bank
accounts and stored-value wallets. Other participants include
Singapore-based Utiba, U.S.-based Sybase 365, YellowPepper, a mobile
vendor in Latin America, and now, India-based Comviva. Mobile operators
who sign agreements with certified Western Union Mobile Vendors and
Western Union will be able to offer their subscribers the option to send
and/or receive money through Western Union’s money transfer system.
Western Union entered the mobile
financial services space in the second quarter of 2008, with an
endorsement for a global pilot program by the GSM Association, a global
trade association representing more than 750 mobile operators
worldwide.
