The latest guesstimate for the U.S. migration to Chip & PIN (EMV) is $9.5 billion and it will take until 2018 to reach a penetration of 80%. This reflects the cost of replacing over one billion insecure magnetic-stripe payment cards, 1.2 million point of sale (POS) card readers and 7 million card reading terminals with the global EMV standard Chip & PIN technology.

Ingenico and PAVO Inc., collaborated to develop the iWE280, a new generation of mobile cash register with electronic fund transfer capability (EFT-POS) as a consequence of a market organization required by the Turkish State. The iWE280 is designed to process a wide range of payments types; customers can use contactless cards such as NFC cards, bank and public transport cards, but also smartcards and cards with magnetic stripes.

Oberthur Technologies’ ID-One PIV for eSE solution is a software suite combining a JavaCard™ applet loaded into the embedded Secure Element (eSE) and an Android application. It enables end-users’ biometric identification to open doors, sign and encrypt emails or use PIV features for a secure cloud access. This product is an answer to organizations which use PKI2 cards for physical and/or logical access control but which do not know how to properly manage mobility of their employees.
Vivacom and Cellum Bulgaria has held a joint demonstration of a technology for purchasing and using e-tickets via mobile phones on Bulgarian subway lines. The mobile payment solution is based on QR codes and can be implemented in the next 7-12 months. It was pointed out by Stoyan Bratoyev, CEO of Sofia Metropolitan that the first positive step has been made and the technical solution has proven to be reliable. The next step to take concerns procedural decisions for bringing the solution and the current regulations of the Municipality in line with each other. Cellum Group has launched its first complex mobile payment solution in Bulgaria, named CellumPay, merely half a year after the founding of its Sofia-based subsidiary. Following the first few months of the introductory phase, this new announcement marks a new milestone in the company’s history. The e-ticketing service will be integrated into CellumPay, thus users will be able to purchase subway tickets through the application.
Cubic Transportation Systems payment and information technology and services for intelligent travel solutions, announced that the latest version of their Cubic Payment Application (CPA 3.0) has been successfully “Validated According to PA-DSS v2.0” by the PCI Security Standards Council, and is listed as “Acceptable for New Deployments” on the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI-DSS) website. CPA 3.0 is architected to provide optimum performance for securely processing legacy closed-loop payments (such as agency issued transit smartcards) as well as emerging forms of payment including open-loop (bank-issued contactless cards), mobile and EMV payments.

Micropross received its validation letter issued by EMVCo, confirming the compliance of their test bench with the “EMVCo PICC Test Bench and Test Cases Requirements” version 2.0.1c. This will make sure a contactless smartcard, or a NFC device that operates as a smartcard, behaves in conformance with the criteria defined by EMVCo.
