Amsterdam-based Design SHIFT has collaborated with Geneva-based STMicroelectronics to integrate ST’s ST54D NFC controller in its groundbreaking privacy appliance, ORWL.
The NFC Forum has published one new and three candidate technical specifications. The specifications deliver new capabilities that support improved RF communication, new and legacy tag support, NFC-V technology and Active Communication Mode.
NXP, Infineon and STMicroelectronics have scored the highest ratings of top IC vendors active within the payment cards. A total of five companies were scrutinized against 10 different criteria all under the categories of Implementation and Innovation.
The NFC Forum announced that Thinfilm and Xerox Corporation have joined the NFC Forum at the Principal level. The first to commercialize printed rewritable memory, Thinfilm is creating printed system products that will include memory, sensing, display and wireless communication such as NFC -at a cost-per-functionality unmatched by any other electronic technology. The SD Association (SDA), a global ecosystem of companies setting industry-leading memory card standards, and the NFC Forum, a non-profit industry association that advances the use of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, today announced a formal Memorandum of Understanding that will enable the two organizations to jointly educate the market and help build the ecosystem for NFC among users of smartSD memory cards. The SDA will work with NFC Forum Special Interest Groups to educate and promote adoption of NFC in conjunction with smartSD memory cards to target vertical markets including consumer electronics, mobile payment, retail, transport and health care. Some of the joint activities under consideration include workshops for target vertical markets, white papers, case studies, consumer research, webcasts, and hosted events or trade shows that demonstrate the business and consumer benefits of using NFC and smartSD memory cards together.
GlobalPlatform announced its Board of Directors for fiscal year 2014*, following annual elections for six of the eleven Board seats. Individual members to serve as Board Officers for a one-year term have also been confirmed, as well as the appointment of a new Mobile Task Force Chair. Marc Kekicheff – Senior Business Leader of Chip Innovation at Visa Inc. retains his position as Chairman. Uwe Wittig – Group Vice-President within the Mobile Security Business Unit at Giesecke & Devrient continues as GlobalPlatform Vice-Chairman; and Yves Moulart – Director of Development and Innovation within STMicroelectronics’ Secure MCUs Division, Integrated Secure Solutions, is again confirmed as GlobalPlatform’s Secretary / Treasurer. First-year members to serve a two-year term include Yves Moulart, Simon Moore, Solutions Architect – ARM, Rémi de Fouchier, Vice-President, Marketing Communication – Gemalto, Arnaud du Chéné, Vice President, Head of Product Quality within Global Chip & Contactless Solutions – MasterCard Worldwide and Sebastian Hans, Senior Standardization Manager – Oracle. Additionally, Jon Geater, Chief Technology Officer at Trustonic was elected to serve a one-year term.
The NFC Forum announced two newly elected Vice Chairmen of its Board of Directors, Trevor Pavey of Broadcom Corporation and Alexander Rensink of NXP Semiconductors. A senior product line manager at Broadcom, Trevor Pavey is a seasoned high tech marketing executive with eight years of RFID and wireless expertise coupled with 17 years of experience in semiconductor technology, marketing, business development, applications, and design. During his tenure at Broadcom, Pavey has been responsible for ecosystem management, including Broadcom’s relationships with the major payment associations and mobile carriers. Earlier in his career, he was instrumental in launching the NFC business at Texas Instruments. Alexander Rensink is strategic marketing director in the Identification business unit at NXP, which he joined in 2007. At NXP, Rensink focuses on the significant potential for identification technology in the mobile market with the goal of expanding the deployment of NFC-based solutions into mobile phones and tablets. In this role, he has had considerable experience in working with both infrastructure suppliers and application developers to deliver end-to-end solutions for vertical markets.
The NFC Forum announced Paula Hunter has been named the organization’s new Executive Director. She comes to the NFC Forum with more than 18 years of leadership experience in technology association management, marketing, operations, and business development. She led global teams and has been a frequent speaker at industry conferences around the world. As Executive Director, Hunter presides over the day-to-day affairs of the NFC Forum under the direction of the Chairman, Officers, and Board of Directors. Her responsibilities include strategic planning and direction, membership development, budgeting, evangelism for the Forum and its mission, and outreach to liaison and vertical market partners. Hunter joins the NFC Forum following more than three years as Executive Director of the Outercurve Foundation, a non-profit foundation formed with the mission of enabling the exchange of code and understanding among software companies and open source communities, and with Outercurve as Director of Operations for SEMPO.
The NFC Forum created the “Special Interest Groups” (SIGs) that will bring together leaders from the areas of Consumer Electronics, Health Care, Payment, Retail, and Transport to collaborate on NFC solution implementation, interoperability, best practices, and future requirements. With this, the SIGs will enable the NFC Forum to take a more active role in driving NFC solutions development, deployment, and adoption. Analysts estimate that more than 100 million NFC-enabled phones were sold in 2012 and close to 300 million will be shipped in 2013. NFC Forum membership is at an all-time high, and the organization has achieved major milestones in specification development and certification. Each SIG leverages the Forum’s alliance partnerships in that area, for educating the market on use cases; gathering business requirements to drive new or modified technical work; exploring ways to speed or smooth certification of NFC-enabled devices; establishing and managing liaisons with other groups to further collaboration efforts; and creating regional programs as needed.

INSIDE Secure semiconductor solutions for secure transactions and digital identity appointed Pierre Garnier executive vice president, NFC and Secure Payment division. He will continue driving the NFC business of INSIDE Secure and supervise the introduction of a new range of secure payment semiconductor platforms for the future U.S. EMV market. He was most recently vice president and general manager at Texas Instruments in charge of the worldwide baseband business and worldwide wireless strategic programs.He was also chairman and CEO of Everbee Networks, a company developing systems-on-chips for personal Internet security devices. Before that, Mr. Garnier was general manager of the Alcatel Microelectronics broadband access business, which he founded and turned into a world-leading ADSL chipset maker before it was acquired by STMicroelectronics in 2002.
