Vodafone Group and MTN Group have inked a deal to interconnect their mobile money services. This will enable customers of M-Pesa and MTN Mobile Money in East Africa to transfer money to each other.
Verifone Mobile Money (VMM) and South Africa’s MTN Group have inked an agreement to deliver retail payment devices to merchants across 16 of MTN’s operating countries. The solution will enable customers to pay for goods and services using their mobile phone and MTN Mobile Money wallet, while merchants will be provided with payment terminal solutions from Verifone.

oti PetroSmart received a follow-on order from Smart Applications International Ltd. (SMART) for 200,000 MediSmart cards. The MediSmart solution is an information management and claims submission system that incorporates contactless smart card and biometric technologies. oti’s MediSmart cards validate the identity of a patient by using fingerprint biometric technology, which cuts down on fraud and impersonation. MediSmart benefits medical administrators, hospitals, clinics, medical service providers and patients by offering fast and secure access to medical information, transaction generation, claims and expense management, and reporting tools. SMART continues building its presence in the African healthcare sector. MediSmart has recently been enhanced to support electronic switching of claims, improving the efficiency of claims delivery and the quality of data delivered to customers.
Cooperative Bank of Kenya has completed its implementation of Misys BankFusion – a transformation platform to support the bank’s rapid expansion plans. Since implementation, the bank’s profits have increased 31 percent to Kshs 3.23 billion, for the first quarter of 2013. Transaction processing throughput has doubled and end-of-day processing has improved by 40%. The bank has 3.4 million customers and is looking to grow this considerably over the next twelve months through superior customer service and an extended branch network able to serve its customers more effectively. Misys BankFusion provides the innovation platform for Cooperative Bank of Kenya’s ambitious growth plans.
MasterCard and Equity Bank of Kenya announced an agreement at a signing ceremony in Nairobi to issue five million MasterCard-branded debit and prepaid cards, over the next 18 months. This program empowers African consumers to use electronic payments which provide a safe and secure way to pay, versus cash and other forms of payment. MasterCard debit and prepaid cards with chip-enabled technology will be issued, first into the Kenyan market and then extended into Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Sudan, signaling the largest rollout of EMV payment cards in sub-Saharan Africa to date. The cards will also introduce MasterCard PayPass with the first ever installation of PayPass enabled point of sale terminals across the region.
Nakumatt is set to introduce the multi-currency EMV MasterCard PayPass Prepaid loyalty card to over one million of its loyalty program members for the largest prepaid merchant agreement for MasterCard in the Middle East and Africa region. The existing Nakumatt Cybercash loyalty card will be replaced with the Nakumatt Global MasterCard Prepaid card, allowing customers to load money onto the card for purchases at POS terminals, cash withdrawals and online purchases at Nakumatt stores across East Africa, and at any retailer that accepts MasterCard payment cards worldwide. Points earned will only be redeemable at Nakumatt stores.

Visa is now allowing access to secure financial services and electronic payments to consumers in developing countries for unbanked and under-banked consumers with a mobile prepaid account. The globally interoperable electronic payment account will be offered to MTN Mobile Money customers across its markets, first to customers in Nigeria and Uganda. This allows account holders to send funds to each other, send and receive international remittances, make purchases at merchants or online where Visa is accepted or withdraw funds at a Visa ATM.
Al Baraka Islamic Bank continued to perform throughout 1H/11, posting a total operating income up 57.97% and net operating income by 48.94% from the year ago period. Meanwhile, total assets increased by 8.46%, loan and investment portfolio by 13.78% and total deposits by 9% as at the end of June 2011 compared to the end of December 2010. There was net income of BD 1.28 million during the first half of 2011 compared to a loss of BD 96 thousand during the first half of 2010. This reflects an improvement in the total income of the bank which amounted to BD 8.4 million compared to BD 5.32 million during the first half of 2010, an increase of 57.97%. After deducting operating expenses, net operating income amounted to BD 954 thousand, an increase of 48.94% over the first half of 2010. The improvement in the bank’s profits reflects an increase the bank’s business both in Bahrain and Pakistan, improvement in the quality of income-generating assets as evidenced by a decline in the volume of non- performing assets and a higher income from foreign trade financing and arrangement of new financing deals.
