Capital Bank has partnered with Diebold, Incorporated (DBD) to standardize its ATMs and support services. Diebold installed 170 Opteva ATMs, 100 of which feature deposit automation capabilities along with comprehensive integrated services to manage the fleet. Through multiple acquisitions over the past two years, the bank’s network included ATMs from several manufacturers that were supported by various vendors. Capital Bank recognized it would be best served by a single source for the delivery and management of its ATM fleet. Through its ATM Endpoint Protection by Symantec™ and software deployment service Diebold will maintain up-to-date anti-virus and operating system software, as well as security patches and provides 24/7 ATM status monitoring, notification, remote diagnostics and failure resolution to keep Capital Bank’s ATMs up and running.
Capital One Financial Corporation and Helzberg Diamonds announced a multi-year extension of the private label credit card program agreement. The partnership enables consumers to have expanded buying power through access to special purchase offers, as well as exclusive benefits and financing options. Capital One’s continued partnership with Helzberg Diamonds reinforces the company’s commitment to building its credit card partnership business.
Fifth Third Bank announced the launch of the Fifth Third Stand Up To Cancer Debit MasterCard. Stand Up To Cancer is a groundbreaking initiative that facilitates scientific collaboration to accelerate innovative cancer research and bring new therapies to patients quickly. The Fifth Third Stand Up To Cancer Debit Card is now available through any of the Bank’s more than 1,300 banking centers and can be used everywhere Debit MasterCard is accepted. A portion of the annual fee and every qualifying card purchase will support Stand Up To Cancer.
Huntington Bank began streamlining invoice and expense payment workflow processes using the MasterCard-branded Huntington commercial credit card. The card combines online card and data management tools and provides a unique monthly rebate payment. Introduced at a time when total estimated U.S. commercial card spend on indirect and direct purchasing will reach $200 billion in 2013, Huntington is now offering a comprehensive set of products for its award-winning treasury management services. This will improve working capital by paying suppliers but deferring cash outflow for up to 50 days, without a finance charge while rebate payments are available up to 13 months sooner than those provided by typical card issuers with annual or single rate scheduled rebates that usually pay out in February of the following year. Huntington’s monthly tiered rebate measure and payment structure is unique, giving customers the opportunity to more quickly pocket higher returns corresponding with monthly spikes in spend volume during the year.
Huntington Bank and Michigan State University Athletics launched the Spartans branded debit card, providing fans who sign up for a Huntington Bank checking account debit card to show their loyalty. The Spartans debit card bears Michigan State University’s Spartan helmet graphic and the Michigan State University athletics wordmark. The debit card can be linked to any of Huntington’s consumer checking accounts including the popular Asterisk-Free Checking®, a checking account without a monthly checking maintenance fee that offers 24-Hour Grace® to help customers avoid overdraft fees. The Spartans debit card launches as Huntington expands into the Lansing area via partnership with Meijer, creating eight in-store branches serving greater Lansing by the end of 2013.
One Point Financial (OPF) ATM operator partnered Huntington Bank, allowing the bank customers to access their accounts with no fee by using ATMs at 88 Go Mart locations. The new ATMs are in addition to the existing 31 Huntington branches and 53 Huntington ATMs. OPF finalized an agreement with Huntington to brand the ATMs. The first ATMs will be placed in Go Marts beginning in early March while all 88 are expected to be placed by mid-March.
Fifth Third Bank announced the introduction of mobile deposit functionality for iPhone and Android users. After customers update their Fifth Third Bank, they will then choose the “Deposit Check” icon, take a photo of the front and back of the check, choose the account to deposit the check and confirm the amount. A confirmation will display once the item is accepted. Fifth Third launched mobile banking in 2009 and now offers customers the ability to view account balances and transaction history, pay bills, transfer money between Fifth Third Bank accounts, locate the nearest Fifth Third Banking Center or ATM and make check deposits.
Fifth Third Bank recently launched Access 360o reloadable prepaid card offering customers financial control, convenience and security. The card is available through any of Fifth Third’s 1,300 banking center locations. There is no charge to load money to the card and customers may do so through deposits at a Fifth Third banking center, direct deposit of paychecks or government benefits, or fund transfers from a Fifth Third Bank checking or savings account. The card can be used anywhere Debit MasterCard® is accepted, and customers may withdraw cash at any banking center or more than 2,400 Fifth Third Bank ATMs.
The American Express OPEN Small Business Monitor shows just 20 percent believe economic conditions are the biggest barrier to growth (compared to 23% in the fall of 2011), fewer have cash flow concerns (53%, versus 58% in the spring) and fewer are stressed out by the economy (59%, versus 64% in the spring). Small business owners’ top priority, is maintaining their current business and sources of revenue (32%) and as a result they have adopted a “wait and see” approach for growth plans. Only 29% of businesses surveyed have plans to hire new employees, down from 35% in the spring.
Only 16% of entrepreneurs say the economy has caused them to lay off employees versus 21% six months ago. The Success Index, profiling High achievers, strivers, sustainers and strugglers, shows high achievers represent 6% of the total survey sample, and on average, have spent twenty-six years in business, employ eighteen people in their firms and have attained business growth of thirty-four percent over the last three years (versus 10% growth for the total survey population). The Success Index was developed based on self-reported responses to questions regarding business growth and characteristics correlated with high-performing entrepreneurs.
The latest Discover Fan Loyalty Poll finds that pizza is king and diets go by the wayside when fans are watching their favorite team play. When asked what their favorite snack was, 23 percent said pizza. Additionally, fans said Wings, 15 percent, Chips and dips, 14 percent, Nachos, 8 percent, Hot dogs or sausage, 6 percent, Pretzels, 4 percent, Something else, 20 percent, Not sure, 10 percent. When asked do game day calories count, 46 percent said ‘No, my diet goes out the window when I’m tailgating or watching my team play;’ 39 percent said ‘Yes, but I still indulge in a few favorites;’ and 10 percent said ‘Absolutely, I don’t overeat or drink when I’m tailgating or watching my team play;’ while 4 percent were unsure. College football fans still have a healthy appetite for Alabama as nearly half, 49 percent, chose them as the best team in the country right now. The Crimson Tide has secured the top spot each week since the beginning of the season. West Virginia also sneaked back onto the list and into the top five after falling off of last week’s poll.

Heartland Payment Systems has delivered more than $262,000,000 in signature debit savings to its merchant customers throughout the United States. Restaurant merchants received more than $75,000,000, lodging merchants received nearly $10,000,000, retail merchants received almost $30,000,000 and petroleum/c-store merchants received more than $55,000,000. The Durbin Amendment, part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act, caps debit card interchange rates for issuing banks with more than $10 billion in assets at 21 cents per transaction, plus one cent for issuers with an effective fraud prevention system, and 0.05% of the volume of transaction.
