FL-based Telefyne Incorporated is promoting Q Comm’s Qxpress 200 POSA solution. Q Comm has already shipped new Qxpress 200 units to Telefyne and will continue to roll out additional units as needed. Telefyne is a facilities-based carrier and switch-based reseller of prepaid services that primarily targets retail and wholesale resellers. The company focuses on serving retailers and has amassed more than 4,500 retailers nationwide that it supplies directly in addition to about 15,000 more that it supplies indirectly through its distributors.
Vodafone Group Plc and T-Mobile International AG announce an
initiative to create an interoperable mobile payment platform to accelerate
customer and merchant adoption of mobile transactions. The companies are
planning to launch the open platform toward the end of the year, with an
initial roll out in Germany and the UK. Vodafone and T-Mobile hope that other
operators will join them in launching the payment platform.
The payment scheme will deliver a secure and easy-to-use payment solution
for the purchase of goods and services via a mobile device. Wireless
customers simply store their personal details and preferred payment options in
a virtual wallet, and then choose which payment instrument they wish to use
when making payments via their mobile phone, similar to undertaking a
transaction from a conventional wallet.
Multiple payment options will be available including traditional credit
and debit cards, making transactions possible with any participating merchant
of the scheme. It is also possible, as part of this scheme, that smaller
purchases will be billed direct either to the customer’s bill, by pre-paid
top-up card or using other micro payment mechanisms. The aim of the scheme is
to provide an end-to-end experience that is convenient, secure, user-friendly

The Minneapolis Downtown Council announced a new program in which downtown Minneapolis shoppers can earn free Northwest Airlines WorldPerks miles during the holiday season. Under the “FLYBUY” program shoppers will earn 100 miles for every $100 they spend at participating stores.
“The Downtown Council has created this unprecedented offer to encourage people to shop downtown and to return travelers to the air which will help Northwest Airlines, an important partner in our regional economy,” said Sam Grabarski, president and CEO of the Minneapolis Downtown Council.
Shoppers will earn one hundred miles for every $100 purchase, up to 2,000 miles. Shoppers can combine these miles with the miles they earn for purchases made using their WorldPerks Visa(R) and earn a free trip even faster.
To receive the miles, shoppers must make their purchases during the FLYBUY promotion (Nov. 23 – Dec. 26) and bring their receipts from participating stores to the Downtown Council booth located on the main floor of City Center, next to the customer service center. Upgrade International Corp. has entered into a definitive merger agreement to acquire ownership of The Pathways Group, Inc. The Pathways Group Inc provides turn key solutions in the smart card arena as a full service hardware integrator, software developer and backroom transactions processor. Upgrade International said today the Pathways acquisition will mark the beginning of the transformation of Upgrade from research and development to a revenue generating group of companies, for the first time since 1998, when it acquired a stake in UltraCard Inc. Pathways said it decided to embrace Upgrade and the UltraCard technology, because it expects ‘UltraCard’ to replace other microprocessor-based technologies.
HNC Software said Friday it has acquired privately held Systems/Link Corporation, headquartered in Cranbury, NJ. Systems/Link develops and markets mobile phone roaming data management, fraud and pre-paid billing software solutions for wireless telecommunications providers. HNC has acquired all of Systems/Link’s outstanding stock and other securities in a merger in exchange for approximately 600,000 shares of HNC common stock, including shares subject to options that will be assumed by HNC in the acquisition and $5.6 million in cash. HNC also agreed to retire $5.7 million in debt. Systems/Link’s flagship product, ‘RoamEx’, the wireless industry’s roaming data exchange network, covers more than 95% of the cellular POPs in North America for delivery of roaming calls back to home carrier target applications for fraud, pre-paid billing management, post-pay usage monitoring and other mission-critical applications.
Boston-based Aberdeen Group released a report this morning projecting that by 2004 there will be 74 million users of m-Commerce. Aberdeen says users want portable, localized information and personalized services and the demand for anytime, anywhere access to the Internet, declining wireless tariffs, and new mobile applications is driving the m-Commerce market.
