Travelex foreign exchange specialist sold its Travelex Global Business Payments (“TGBP”) business payments operations to Western Union for GBP606 million to shift focus on its 30 million retail customers with the provision of cash and pre-paid cards. With revenues last year up 17% driven by continuing expansion and contract wins in its prepaid card division, Travelex now has a network of close to 1,000 stores and more than 500 ATMs across 24 countries, as well as a growing online platform. The transaction also represents an attractive opportunity for Western Union, which will benefit from TGBP’s expertise as a leading provider of international business payments.

First Data Extends GERMAN Processing Contract

First Data Corporation electronic commerce and payment processing, has extended its contract with Oldenburgische Landesbank AG (OLB) for a further five years. The agreement covers First Data services provided to its business units OLB Regionalbank and Allianz Bank, which include providing issuing processing services for both banks’ credit card portfolios, to include processing electronic transactions and the provision of operational services such as applications processing, client services, fraud management and disputes and collections services. The contract extension follows the successful migration of Allianz Bank’s credit card portfolio, which has enabled the banks to consolidate both credit card portfolios on to a single platform provided by First Data.

Court Issues Adverse Opinion on Card Activation Patent

Card Activation Technologies POS technology for the processing of transactions related to debit gift cards, phone cards and other stored value cards announced the US District Court in Delaware issued its opinion on SVS and CAT’s cross-motions for summary judgment on July 1, 2011. The Court’s ruling is adverse to CAT and the validity of the ‘859 Patent and expected to have an impact on the reexamination proceedings pending in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. CAT is currently considering its options in moving forward. Card Activation Technologies owns the patent rights to a proprietary payment transaction method used for processing gift cards and other debit purchase transactions.

OneMain Financial consumer finance lending arm of Citigroup re-branded its U.S. Full Service Network from CitiFinancial to distinguish its business with an identity that better represents who it is and what it does. Qatar Implements Gemalto eGovernment Services

Gemalto digital security has been selected by Qatar’s Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology (ictQATAR), to deploy the Coesys eGov 2.0 solution for eGovernment. Using citizens’ national eID card as an authentication token, the solution will boost usage and enhance access security of their national eGovernment services portal – the Hukoomi. Qatar plans to expand the existing service to integrate more than 50 eGovernment initiatives over the next years. Citizens will subsequently experience considerable ease of access to their national eGovernment services from the comfort of their homes, and perform administrative procedures such as visa application, commercial registration, electricity bill payment or health card renewal.
