69% of Shoppers to Rely on Funds, Avoid Credit

Avoiding credit card use, 69% of shoppers are planning to primarily use only debit cards, cash, checks, gift cards and prepaid cards to pay for gifts this holiday season. Overall, 43.0% plan to use debit cards as their primary form of payment for the holidays and 25.7% plan to use cash. Moreover, 25% of consumers who used their credit card for holiday shopping last year said that they are less likely to use credit cards for purchases this year while 10% intend to not use them at all. These findings, according to the Bedford Report and the Green Dot Corporation, also show only 27.6% of shoppers plan to use credit cards at all. Meanwhile, more than half those age 35-44 and 45-54 were concerned about accumulating holiday shopping debt; women are more likely than men to say they are at least somewhat concerned about accruing debt at 52% vs. 45%, respectively. This is in conjunction with findings the number of open credit card accounts has dropped 24% since 2Q/08 while revolving credit dropped for a 25th consecutive month at the annual rate of $8.3 billion by 12.1%.

DeviceFidelity Adds Support for Android OS

The DeviceFidelity microSD-based “In2Pay” technology for plug and play mobile contactless transactions is now available on the Android OS, in addition to BlackBerry, iPhone, Windows and Symbian platforms. Android is the second most popular mobile phone operating system with 25.5% global market share, up from 3.5% last year and leads the US market with a 44% share, followed by Apple and RIM. Mobile payment using the DeviceFidelity “In2Pay” solution is compatible with most Android OS based devices popular in the US, Europe and Asia, including handsets from Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony Ericsson and Huawei. The “In2Pay” solution for Android allows issuers and wireless carriers the choice of either using existing third party applications or developing their own custom applications for mobile contactless transactions.

Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) and Secusmart have released a new generation of the “SecuVOICE” solution for wiretap-proof cell phone calls to allow the federal authorities to make phone calls and send SMS messages with no risk of interception. This is thanks to the Secusmart Security Card, which encrypts calls and SMS messages end-to-end and provides secure authentication. The microSD card used in the cell phone was specially developed for Secusmart by Giesecke & Devrient Secure Flash Solutions (G&D SFS), a joint venture of G&D and Phison Electronics Corporation. The German federal authorities will soon be deploying the first crypto cards to offer this combined functionality. This new solution from G&D and Secusmart uses hardware-based encryption, which means that subscriber authentication and voice and data encryption take place exclusively within the Secusmart Security Card itself. Tyfone Get Additional Patent for m-Wallet

Tyfone unified mobile money and secure transaction infrastructure for mobile banking, mobile identity management, and mobile contactless NFC payments, announced the award of its newest patent for the company’s innovative mobile electronic wallet technology. Issued on November 9, 2010 and entitled “Mobile phone with electronic transaction card,” the patent’s effective filing date is February 22, 2005. It allows the use of a mobile phone having a memory card slot and a memory card compatible with the memory card slot to transmit transaction data to a reader device. The memory card includes circuitry used to produce a time-varying magnetic field that enables a contactless transaction.

MasterCard Appoints Two Marketing Heads

MasterCard Worldwide has appointed Deborah Hsu Serianni as Group Head of Global Consumer Marketing, and Benjamin Jankowski as Group Head of Global Media. Deborah Hsu Serianni will be responsible for developing and managing MasterCard’s consumer marketing strategies around the world to drive brand preference and revenue growth by partnering with key stakeholders to deliver targeted, integrated solutions that address the needs of segments around the world. Benjamin Jankowski will be responsible for coordinating MasterCard’s media plans, media mix and consumer targeting while focusing on optimizing marketing investments through continued improvements in efficiencies and effectiveness. Serianni was most recently the Global Vice President of Personal Care, Hair Care and Wellness for Avon Products after having spent nine years with Johnson & Johnson in Asia-Pacific and eight years with Procter & Gamble in Europe. Jankowski brings with him three decades of brand strategy and media planning experience and joins MasterCard from OMD, a division of the Omnicom Group Inc, where he most recently served as the Global Account Director for Johnson & Johnson and previously for PepsiCo International.

Retail Sales Up Across The Board

According to the Mastercard “SpendingPulse,” most spending categories are posting increases for the pre-season period. Through November 13, 2010, Total Apparel sales were up 9.7% against the same period last year, compared to the year-over-year increase of 8.2% last month. The Luxury category, tracking sales at high-end restaurant, food stores, department stores and general apparel categories, was up 6.7%, compared to the year ago figure which was down 9.2% and the month ago figure which was up 4.2% year over year. eCommerce was up on the 7%-plus gains of August, September and October by 11.4% year-over year while Electronics and Appliances category was back up by 0.4% and 0.3%, respectively, after having collectively dropped 3.1% in October.

JetPay Extends Secure Vault Payments

Secure Vault Payments will now be offered to the JetPay client base. Secure Vault Payments is an online payment network developed by NACHA and eWise online payment and personal financial management solutions. Secure Vault Payments is designed for the unique security and convenience requirements of online payments and ecommerce. When completing an online purchase or bill payment, a consumer selects Secure Vault Payments as the payment option and is automatically redirected to his online bank. The consumer selects the account from which to make the payment and is redirected back to the merchant or biller to receive confirmation of payment and the merchant or biller does not have to secure or store any financial data.

Local Authorities and wider public sector organizations will now use Advanced Payment Solutions’ prepaid cards to make payments to any client group. The agreement which sees Co-operative Bank introducing it’s customers to APS , so they might consider alternative payment methods to traditional check issuing for benefits, social care and localised petty cash. This allows easier and quicker management of expenditure through a more transparent and flexible payment method while builds on an existing five-year relationship between the Bank, APS and the Post Office to allow individuals, small businesses and local authorities to add value to the pre paid cards at the Post Office.
