2Q/10 CU Credit Card Folios Grow 7.4% Y/Y

Second quarter 2010 credit union credit card portfolio trends show for the roughly 2,150 credit unions with credit card portfolios of $1 million and larger outstanding balances grew at an annual rate of 7.4% between June 2009 and June 2010 to $34 billion, continuing the trend of mid-single digit growth, for which total assets grew at an annual rate of 6.8% over the same period. Meanwhile, card accounts grew at a 3.1% annual rate over the same period to 12.6 million; cards as a percentage of total assets increased slightly to 4.6 percent in the second quarter of 2010, up from 4.5% in the second quarter of 2009 ad credit card penetration continues to trend near 18%. Data provided in this analysis is for credit card portfolios larger than $1 million in each time period. Jack Henry Bank Clients Outperform by 36 BPS

The average Jack Henry & Associates client of its “ProfitStars” division outperform the industry in terms of net interest margin (NIM) by 36 basis points, when compared to 4,000 other U.S. community banks of comparable size. These conclusions were drawn based on results from users of the “ProfitStars” “Margin Maximizer Suite” loan and deposit pricing solution and “BusinessManager” accounts receivable financing solution. Additionally, ProfitStars’ pricing strategy recommendations typically generate an improvement of 10 to 50 NIM basis points within the first year following implementation and there was a rapidly increased NII for ProfitStars’ clients at an 8% growth rate versus the industry average of 5.92%. Great-West Life group benefits has signed an agreement with Evolution Benefits to develop the “Health SolutionsPlus” Visa payment card. The “Health SolutionsPlus” Visa will be loaded with a group plan member’s HCSA funds. The card will allow members to conveniently pay for covered health-related products and services from providers authorized by Great-West Life, using the provider’s existing Visa payment processing equipment. This will significantly reduce the need for plan members to pay upfront and submit paper or electronic claims for reimbursement, thereby decreasing out-of-pocket expenses.

QR CODES

QR Loyalty now allows restaurants to deploy sticky and viral loyalty programs with its “QR Codes,” allowing consumers to pay and get discounts using web enabled mobile phones. With research showing this has potential to increase revenue 5% to 10%, “QR Codes” contains a transaction identifier printed at the bottom of every bill along with a call-to-action prompting customers to scan the QR code to auto-enrol in the restaurant’s loyalty program and begin earning loyalty rewards through the POS terminal software. The “QR Code” automatically links users to a mobile web app where users can interact with their loyalty account.

MASTERCARD POS

MasterCard Canada announced a six-month extension for Canadian merchants to migrate to chip-and-PIN POS technology, with the original timeline of October 15, 2010 extended to March 31, 2011. With this deadline, MasterCard accepting merchants who have not upgraded to chip-enabled point-of-sale terminals will be liable for fraudulent transactions effected at their POS. Chip migration brings additional significant security enhancements to Canadians, using a small computer processor chip with memory, logic and a configuration of software applications, significantly enhancing security and preventing unauthorized use or copying.

Visa Canada and its Canadian card-issuing financial institutions, in response to requests from the merchant community, have assisted merchants by postponing the domestic chip liability shift’s effective date to March 31, 2011. This date signifies when Canadian merchants become liable for domestic card-present fraudulent transactions that may have been avoided by adopting Chip technology. Liability involving chip cards used at non-chip devices was originally slated to shift on October 1, 2010, but issuers will continue to absorb the liability for domestic transactions until March 31, 2011.
