Conference Board Index Up 0.1% in July

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index for the U.S. increased 0.1%
in July to 109.8, following a 0.3% decline in June, and a 0.5% increase
in May while the Coincident Economic Index (CEI) for the U.S. increased
0.2% in July to 101.4, following a 0.1% decline in June, and a 0.4%
increase in May. The Conference Board Lagging Economic Index® (LAG)
increased 0.4 percent in July to 107.9, following a 0.1 percent increase
in June, and a 0.1 percent decline in May. The ten components of the US
LEI include average weekly hours; average weekly initial claims for
unemployment insurance; manufacturers’ new orders, consumer goods and
materials; index of supplier deliveries – vendor performance;
manufacturers’ new orders, nondefense capital goods; building permits,
new private housing units; stock prices, 500 common stocks; money
supply, M2; interest rate spread, 10-year Treasury bonds less federal
funds and index of consumer expectations.

MoneyGram International is donating to relief efforts for the devastation caused by flooding in Pakistan with a portion of its send fee from every money transfer sent to the Country from participating countries. Beginning August 20th through September 20, $3 USD from each transaction made to Pakistan will be donated to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts in Pakistan. All MoneyGram agents in Pakistan, including Bank Al Falah, MCB Bank and Wall Street Exchange, are currently conducting business and thus recipients can readily collect remittances. This is in response to the more than $1 million in community support included global relief efforts after disasters in El Salvador, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Samoa and Tonga.

O2 to Acquire 50% of Dominican FI

O2 Secure Wireless is set to acquire a 50% equity interest in a 30-year-old Dominican Republic Financial Institution, and is scheduled to close early September 2010 to provide an additional source of revenue, along with a convenient method for payment of communications services. The opportunity will primarily allow the company to simplify the payment process for its wireless, cellular, cable, residential phone and internet service clients by using a prepaid MasterCard/Debit Card product for customer payments, while simultaneously providing a new bank branch location wherever an Earthcom retail storefront is created, whereas the bank’s credit card merchant processing system will utilize Earthcom’s wireless infrastructure for processing transactions. Currently, the merchant card processing services industry is dominated by two providers and with exceptionally high processing rates, while the MasterCard prepaid Debit card product is still a virtually unknown system in the Dominican Republic market.

Visa has introduced its Prepaid card with general purpose payment, transit fare acceptance and event ticketing features. The Visa Prepaid card’s functions include the ability to make purchases at Visa merchants, and pay for trips on Singapore’s public transportation system. The cards will also be used as the means for entry to the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) closing ceremonies on August 26, and were used for admission to the opening ceremony on August 14. Visa Prepaid programs around the world can combine Visa acceptance with applications such as identification, building access, healthcare benefits, government disbursement, medical and school discounts, and money transfer, among others. Visa Prepaid cards can also be designed with multiple “purses” enabling funds from different sources on the same card.

BBB Warns College Students About Fraud Risks

More than 11 million people became victims of identity theft in 2009, of which, those aged 18-24 took the longest to detect identity theft. Taking an average of 132 days to detect their identity was at stake, those in this demographic lost an average of $1,156 to recover from the incident, roughly five times that lost by other age groups. This, according to the “2010 Identity Fraud Survey Report” released by Javelin Strategy and Research, is prompting the BBB to recommend students ensure their computer has up-to-date antivirus and spyware software; check your credit or debit card statements closely for any suspicious activity; check their credit report at least once a year with all three reporting bureaus to spot suspicious activity or inaccuracies; send sensitive mail to a permanent address; and to store important documents in a filing cabinet or other secure location.
