Visa has introduced its Prepaid card with general purpose payment, transit fare acceptance and event ticketing features. The Visa Prepaid card’s functions include the ability to make purchases at Visa merchants, and pay for trips on Singapore’s public transportation system. The cards will also be used as the means for entry to the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) closing ceremonies on August 26, and were used for admission to the opening ceremony on August 14. Visa Prepaid programs around the world can combine Visa acceptance with applications such as identification, building access, healthcare benefits, government disbursement, medical and school discounts, and money transfer, among others. Visa Prepaid cards can also be designed with multiple “purses” enabling funds from different sources on the same card.

Barclaycard is increasing the balance transfer period on its “Platinum” card to 16 months at 0% for new customers with a handling charge of 2.9%. The Card also offers 0% interest on purchases for the first three months and a typical APR of 16.9%. BBB Warns College Students About Fraud Risks

More than 11 million people became victims of identity theft in 2009, of which, those aged 18-24 took the longest to detect identity theft. Taking an average of 132 days to detect their identity was at stake, those in this demographic lost an average of $1,156 to recover from the incident, roughly five times that lost by other age groups. This, according to the “2010 Identity Fraud Survey Report” released by Javelin Strategy and Research, is prompting the BBB to recommend students ensure their computer has up-to-date antivirus and spyware software; check your credit or debit card statements closely for any suspicious activity; check their credit report at least once a year with all three reporting bureaus to spot suspicious activity or inaccuracies; send sensitive mail to a permanent address; and to store important documents in a filing cabinet or other secure location.

ScanSource Quarterly Sales Total Record $582mm

ScanSource POS, communications, and electronic security products has posted 2Q/10 net sales of $582 million and net income of $14.0 million. For the quarter, net sales increased 32% to $582 million compared to $441 million for the year ago period. Net income was up 12.4% compared to $12.5 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2009. Meanwhile, net sales increased $267 million, or 14.4% to $2.1 billion, compared to the prior year ended June 30, 2009; fiscal year operating income also increased 2.2% to $75.8 million from $74.1 million for the prior fiscal year; net income increased 2.4% to $48.8 million compared to $47.7 million for the prior fiscal year; and diluted earnings per share increased 1.7% to $1.82 compared to $1.79 in the prior fiscal year.

This transaction is expected to result in greater than $500,000 of “other income” affecting our third quarter 2010 results. This settlement prevents the conversion of Nutmeg debt into company stock that, as reported in the June 30, 2010 10-Q report, could have been potentially more than 7,350,000 shares due to the conversion of the notes and the grant of warrants under the terms of the notes.

Final Phase of CARD Act Imminent

August 22 marks the date the final provisions of the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure (CARD) Act of 2009 will go into effect. As the most comprehensive overhaul of the credit card industry in history, the law has been implemented in stages over the past year to empower credit card customers with greater choice, predictability and transparency. The bulk of the reform provisions took effect in February for protection against interest rate increases, streamlining billing practices, restricting various fees, and providing greater safeguards for young adults. The provisions taking effect this Sunday require so-called “penalty fees” to be reasonable and proportional, ban inactivity fees, and require card issuers to review accounts that have had rate increases every six months to see if the higher rate is still warranted.
