NCR Installs Blockbuster DVD Rental Kiosk at Bashas’ Markets

NCR has installed the Blockbuster Express DVD rental kiosk at AZ-based Bashas’ and Food City supermarkets.
Each BLOCKBUSTER Express kiosk holds more than 900 DVDs, providing the
largest selection of popular movie titles and new releases of any DVD
rental kiosk. No membership is required – customers simply swipe their
credit card and are charged $1 per night for a rental. A DVD can then be
returned to any BLOCKBUSTER Express kiosk – not just where the DVD was
rented.

Small Cos Post 12.15% Drop in Card Sales Y/Y

Main Street brick and mortar retailers and restaurants experienced year-over-year card sales declines again in 4Q/09, showing a 12.15% drop from 4Q/08, reflecting a decrease in the rate of decline reported in 3Q/09 versus 3Q/08 results of 14.84%. This was the ninth consecutive quarter in which overall year-over-year same store card sales showed a decline, which began for restaurants in 3Q/08 and for retailers in 2Q/07, according to the Capital Access Network (CAN) Data Services Division. The rate of year-over-year decline in card sales, however, decreased from 3Q/09, reversing a trend of accelerating declines in year-over-year sales for the past two years. Additional findings show areas with populations of less than 100,000 and those with between 100,000 and 249,999 reported declines of 8.26% and 6.49%, respectively, while areas with populations between 249,999 and 999,999 and those with populations of more than 1 million reported declines between 4Q/09 and 4Q/08 of 12.15% and 13.54%, respectively. In 4Q/09, all regions continued to show a year-over-year quarterly decline in same store credit sales with the Plains Region dramatically slowing its rate of decline to 2.43% compared to 14.54% in 3Q/09 while the Southwest Region increased its rate of decline to 16.88% compared to 15.92% in 3Q/09.

Acacia Subsidiary Patents Portable Card Terminal

An Acacia Research Corporation subsidiary has acquired the rights to patents for portable credit card processing technology. Selected as a partner for the licensing of their patented technologies, Acacia’s growth is based on future revenues from such patent portfolios. This technology allows merchants to fill orders to customers, allowing for validating payment card information on a portable point of sale device. Acacia Research’s subsidiaries control over 140 patent portfolios, covering technologies used in a wide variety of industries.

available its “payShield” Cardholder Authentication for “nShield
Connect” and “nShield PCI Express” hardware security modules (HSMs). The
“payShield” Cardholder Authentication for “nShield” authenticates credit
card users and protects encryption key transfers to safeguard credit
card information and assisting with regulatory compliance such as PCI.
The “payShield” Cardholder Authentication for “nShield” is already
widely deployed in web-based applications for MasterCard’s Chip
Authentication Program (CAP) and Visa’s Dynamic Passcode Authentication
(DPA) for online banking and 3D-Secure applications such as Verified by
Visa and MasterCard SecureCode for online payments. This supports

PCI CHAIRPERSON

The PCI Security Standards Council announced that Bruce
Rutherford, group head, fraud management solutions, payment system
integrity, MasterCard, has been appointed as the new chairperson of the
PCI Security Standards Council. Rutherford will steer the Council as it
works with industry stakeholders to create and release new standards in
2010. Per the Council’s bylaws, the chairperson is rotated annually among each
of the five payment card brands that make up the Council’s Executive
Committee: American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB
International, MasterCard Worldwide and Visa Inc.
In his new position, Rutherford succeeds Lib De Veyra, vice president,
emerging technologies at JCB International who held the position during
the Council’s important feedback period within the standards lifecycle.

Visa Rolls Out Go World Olympic Ad Campaign

Visa has launched its month long “Go World” campaign initiative within New York City’s Grand Central Terminal, covering the subway corridor with 3D video and static images from the company’s global Olympic-themed advertising. The “Go World” campaign will also utilize YouTube and Facebook to help bring more fans closer to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and Team Visa Vancouver athletes. At YouTube, Visa will introduce a complete redesign and content refresh of the Go World channel with six new commercials while its “Go World” Facebook fan page will offer Olympic fans regular updates and unique glimpses into the lives of Team Visa Vancouver athletes.
