Hispanic Spending Growth 3.3% Higher than Average

Growth in Hispanic spending was twice the growth in general market
spending, having increased 6.4% from 2005 to 2008 compared to
non-Hispanic consumer spending having grown 2.9% in that same period.
This spending growth demonstrates significant commercial opportunities
in major categories where Hispanic consumer spending growth far outpaced
the general market, including cereals, computers, education, fees and
admissions, food away from home, laundry and cleaning supplies, major
appliances, vehicle finance and insurance, women’s apparel and a range
of other categories. These findings, according to a December 2009
analysis of consumer expenditures and corporate growth strategies by the
Latinum Network, also shows U.S. Hispanic consumers were responsible for
30% of the $40 billion growth in the food business; U.S. Hispanics spent 58%
more on education compared to a much more modest increase of 9% for
non-Hispanics; and U.S. Hispanics increased their entertainment spend on
fees and admissions by 14% as compared to a 7% decline for non-Hispanics.

About 40% of Americans Not Confident in Economy

The number of people who believe that the U.S. economy could enter
another recession in 2010 now stands at 40% while another 32% are unsure
if a “double-dip” recession is imminent in 2010. Only 28% of
people are confident that no recession will occur in 2010. These
findings, according to the “Wealth Hazards Worry Index”, also showed
continuing concerns about the expiration of government stimulus and
support programs and how this might impact their own financial health
regarding the high rate of unemployment, rising interest rates, price
inflation, more foreclosures, and flat wages or even wage deflation.
Additional findings show consumers are not completely convinced that the
recovery is fully underway and that their own lives and financial health
is about to improve.
