Aberdeen Releases a Report on POS Systems

Marketing intelligence service Aberdeen has released the “Aberdeen AXIS
Report for POS Systems” that provides POS vendor assessments. Aberdeen
found that at least 60% of
retailers have POS or point-of-service systems that are older than five
years; out of the 60%, 35% of retailers currently use POS systems that
are older than 10 years. AXIS was developed in
response to requests from Aberdeen’s 2.5+ million business readers
spanning 40 countries, including representation from 90% of the Fortune
1000. Aberdeen is a provider of fact-based research and market
intelligence.

TASQ & HYPERCOM

One of the largest providers of POS equipment and services in North America has inked a deal to market Hypercom’s new 32-bit “Optimum T4205” to the Canadian marketplace. TASQ Technology will offer the new terminal which is targeted at small independent merchants. The “T4205” shares the same platform and compact form factor inherent in Hypercom’s “T4200” line of products. It is “PCI PED” approved and “Interac” certified. It supports French, English and Spanish and can process debit, credit, smart card and value-added transactions such as gift/loyalty. TASQ says the “T4205” is an excellent entry-level solution for small merchants looking for an upgraded “EMV/Interac” terminal replacement.

APACS PAYMENT GUIDE

Payment association APACS has produced “Payments & accessibility”, a
new advice guide aimed at helping consumers with a disability access the
range of services available. The Payments & accessibility guide covers
a range of payment methods, including cheques, telephone and internet
banking and plastic cards, together with advice on staying safe from
fraud. It is free to download
from the APACS website at www.apacs.org.uk and has been shared with
groups representing those with disabilities.
Under The Banking Code, banks and building societies are obliged to
provide customers with alternatives if they are unable to use standard
services.

Skybox Security Joins the PCI Council

Risk and compliance management solution provider Skybox Security has
joined the PCI Security Standards Council as a new participating
organization. As a Participating Organization, Skybox Security will now
have access to the latest payment card security standards from the
Council, be able to provide feedback on the standards and become part of
a growing community that now includes nearly 500 organizations. Skybox
is the first and only network compliance and assurance
vendor to support the PCI DSS V1.2 standard released in October. Through
its participation, Skybox aims to the advance the automation of
assessments and compliance processes for network-related PCI
requirements – some of the most difficult for enterprises to enforce due
to high complexity and labor costs.

WIRECARD & LIDL

Electronic payment provider Wirecard has been selected to provide credit
card payment processing for retailer Lidl’s new online shop. Lidl is a
retailer of household goods, tools and toys and winter
sport articles. In implementing the project, a great deal of importance
was assigned to establishing the shop from the very beginning on a
technologically sophisticated level and simultaneously exploiting the
existing core structures of the parent company, Schwarz Group. Wirecard
supports over 10,000 companies from many and various industry segments in automating their payment processes and minimizing cases of default. Wirecard Bank provides account and credit card services both for business and private customers and is a Principal Member of VISA, MasterCard and JCB.

Cyber Tuesday December 2nd Rules in 2008

Transaction volume continues to run high for online holiday sales but dollar volume is down thus dropping average e-sales ticket by 12% compared to last year. The data also show that “Cyber Monday” remains a myth, as the highest online sales day so far transpired on Tuesday, December 2nd. According to Chase Paymentech’s “Cyber Holiday Pulse Index” e-sales dollar volume was on Tuesday, December 2nd was 74% higher than “Cyber Monday,” December 1st. Sales for that day were up 47% versus last year and transactions were up 55%, the largest single day ever for the “Pulse Index.” The tracking also shows that through Monday, December 8th, the transaction count is ahead of last year by 28% while sales volume is up by 14%. Chase Paymentech monitors the daily activity of 25 of the largest 150 Internet retailers. For December 1st (Monday) the tracking dollar volume was $126 million, compared to $219 million for December 2nd (Tuesday) and $139 million for December 8th (Monday).

Nov Spending Monitor Paints a Dark Picture

Consumers’ economic confidence fell to a record low in November as
concern over personal finances reached record highs. More than half of
Americans plan to spend less on discretionary purchases and on home
improvement purchases while 49% plan on spending less on major personal
purchases. The “Discover U.S. Spending Monitor” fell to 79.7 in
November, falling below 80 for the first time in its history. The
“Index” stood at 80.4 for October and 93.1 one-year ago. A record high
62% of consumers rated their finances as “fair” or “poor” in November
and 56% reported that their finances were getting worse, which is also a
record high. Sixty-four percent of consumers rated current economic
conditions as “poor,” a record high and a near 30-point increase from a
year ago. More than 60% of consumers in all three income groups polled
(under 40k, 40k-75k, over 75k) rated the economy as “poor.” November
numbers also showed that 42% of consumers have at least begun their
holiday shopping. This compares to 39% who said the same thing in
November 2007.
