Wachovia Continues to Puruse Agreement with Wells Fargo

Wachovia will continue to pursue its new agreement with Wells Fargo, counter to the court order issued this weekend. Wachovia continues to believe its agreement with Wells Fargo, which
involves no government assistance, is proper and valid. The agreement is in
the best interests of shareholders, employees, creditors and retirees as
well as the American taxpayers, and it imposes no risk to the FDIC fund. Wachovia does not
believe Justice Ramos’ order has any effect on the validity of the Wells
Fargo agreement with Wachovia. However, under that agreement, Citigroup is always free to make a superior offer
to Wachovia.

OBERTHUR COLOR PRESS

Card manafacturer Oberthur Technologies has installed a new eight-color
press in its production facility in Exton, Pennsylvania. The eight-color
press is an upgrade from standard
industry presses which print six or fewer colors. The press increases
card manufacturing efficiency because it requires less print passes than
presses with six or fewer colors thus, requiring less press set-ups and
operates three times faster than a standard six-color press.
Additionally, due to the advanced technology of the press, it provides
superior print quality. The eight-color press is part of Oberthur’s
multi-million dollar
expansion plan which will significantly increase the company’s card
manufacturing, finishing and personalization capacity this year.

AMERICAN EXPRESS & MAURITIUS

MCB has announced that it will issue
the American Express Green Card and the American Express Gold Card in
Mauritius. MCB and American Express have had a merchant acquiring
partnership in Mauritius since 2003. As part of the partnership
agreement, MCB will continue to be
responsible for managing relationships with the many merchants that
already accept the American Express Card and for enrolling new merchants
in Mauritius to accept American Express at their establishment.

AmEx Small Business Owners Challenged by Economy

A recent report by the American Express OPEN Small Business Monitor indicates one third of small business owners report the
uncertain economy as the biggest challenge they face growing their
businesses. In the survey conducted by Echo Research, the economy is
cited by 38% as the issue that will
most sway their decision on the next president of the United States,
followed at a distance by tax policy, cited by 18%. Among business owners experiencing cash flow issues, 17% feel the biggest worry
is the ability to pay bills on time. One quarter of business
owners in the retail sector are concerned about the ability to pay bills
on time. Additional concerns for 13% of business owners overall include accounts receivable, the ability to accurately track cash flow (9%); having enough cash to win new business and the ability to meet payroll (both 8%). As a tactic to improve cash flow, 27% of businesses overall are most
likely to use personal or private funds. One in five will put off
purchases, while 11% will use a credit or charge cards; this tactic
doubles among manufacturers (23% vs. 16% of retailers and 8% of services
companies), lease rather than purchase business equipment (3%), or get a
short-term loan in order to improve cash flow (2%).

APAX ASIAN MARKETS

Electronic payment provider APAX Global Payment and Technologies
is expanding its business operations into the Asian Market. APAX has
opened an office in Hanoi Vietnam
to facilitate the huge demand for its credit card and electronic payment
products in that region. The Hanoi office offers card processing related
services for local merchants accepting POS transactions as well as online
card processing for merchants from the entire region. Within its first two
weeks of operation APAX has been able to successfully launch its products
with a local branch of a well known international hotel chain and a local
airline. The Hanoi office will also be hosting the customer support center
for the APAX group, employing up to 150 people.
