CARD REPAYMENT PLANS

A new report from Moody’s entitled “Credit
Card Repayment Plans” and focused on the UK market, demonstrates that it
is possible for the
performance reflected in monthly settlement reports not to fully
illustrate the true condition of a trust because it can be difficult to
understand from the information provided the amount of receivables in
repayment plans, their new payment obligations and the treatment of these
receivables. While credit card repayment plans can be highly
effective in increasing the amount of collections received from
cardholders on the verge of default, they can prove problematic
in securitisation transactions backed by credit card receivables in
certain circumstances, potentially resulting in distorted
performance-related ratios and, in particular, understated reported
charge-off levels, In particular, Moody’s believes that, depending upon the
growth in receivables under these plans and the method of reporting
chosen by the originator, the reported level of trust charge-offs could
be understated and series excess spread levels overstated.

Holiday Gift Card Sales May Slip to $25B

Holiday gift card sales may dip to $25 billion this year, compared to
$35 billion in 2007. A new survey also suggests that the restaurant/fast
food category will sell more cards than any other category this holiday
season. CT-based Archstone Consulting says its survey found that
consumers will spend less on gift cards this holiday season and will
also shift their gift card spending towards household necessities such
as groceries and gas or small indulgences such as dining at
restaurants. But, teenage and post-college consumers will represent the
bulk of the increase in gift card purchases. Additionally, sales of gift
cards through outside locations, such as grocery, drug stores, banks and
kiosks are expected to grow significantly, by 30% versus 2007. Archstone
also notes that pre-paid bank cards (Visa, American Express, Master
Card, etc.) will continue to be the most desired by gift recipients this
year – as they were in 2007.
