Bancorp Bank to Issue the Obopay MasterCard

Obopay, the pioneering service provider for payments via mobile phones, has partnered with The Bancorp Bank to issue prepaid payment cards linked to Obopay mobile payment accounts. The new MasterCards will be linked to Obopay mobile money accounts. In June, MasterCard and Obopay inked a partnership to offer a fully-integrated on-demand P2P mobile payment service in the USA. The new “MasterCard MoneySend” service will enable new and existing MasterCard issuing customers the ability to provide an innovative mobile payments service to their MasterCard cardholders on all credit, debit and prepaid MasterCard-branded products. Participants will use mobile numbers to send and receive funds, keeping their payment account numbers private. TowerGroup estimates that in the USA, adoption of consumer mobile banking has quintupled in the past 12 months from 1.1 million active users in 2007 to 5.7 million active users today. GA-based POS solution provider MATRA Systems has introduced the “FREEDOM
Solution Center”, an enterprise software solution that collects and
standardizes POS data. MATRA’s “FREEDOM Solution Center” allows for
critical strategic decisions based on incomplete or inconsistent
transaction data. It collects the data and securely
delivers it at near-real time speed to a retailer’s headquarters, for
use by applications such as data warehousing, loss prevention, CRM,

GPN Invades the Russian Federation via UCS

Atlanta-based Global Payments has inked a deal to acquire Moscow-based ZAO United Card Service. UCS provides indirect
payment processing services to over 70 financial institutions and for over 2,500 ATMs in Russia. In December, UCS entered into a ten-year marketing alliance agreement with Rosbank, which provides UCS with Visa and MasterCard bank sponsorship. Rosbank, along with over 40 other financial institutions in the Russian Federation, also provides agent bank processing referrals to UCS under this agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, GPN will pay $120 million in cash to acquire UCS. According to CardFlash international, UCS produced $34.2 million in revenue last year with approximately one half of the revenues from the company’s direct acquiring operations.

Bank has deployed its EMV “Visa Electron” debit card. In doing so,
QIB added TSYS’ “PRIME Perso” value-added personalization system to form

San Fran Firm Offers Consumer Credit Karma

San Francisco startup Credit Karma has introduced a service to provide
consumers with free and repeated access to a standard credit score. The
new service launch allows the consumer to track the same single credit
score used by most lenders to make credit decisions for free and at any
time, as oppose to having to $15 to $30 a month. The company has also
built a suite of online tools and simulators to help consumers
understand how specific behaviors such as opening or closing a line of
credit can improve this credit score over time. Credit Karma also helps
consumers learn how to leverage their score through Karma Offers, where
advertisers provide preferred pricing to individuals based on the
strength of their score.

Transaction Wireless Names a New CEO

CA-based Transaction Wireless has hired Bruce Springer, previously with
BidShift as CEO and Thomas Niedbalski,previously with Stored Value
Solutions, as VP, sales and marketing. Springer was president
and CEO of BidShift, a SaaS company focused on healthcare staffing. and
founded and was managing director of GreenSpring Ventures, an early
stage venture capital firm. He served as co-founder, COO and EVP of
WebMD, an internet healthcare and transaction services business.
Niedbalski joined the Company from Stored Value
Solutions (SVS), one of the world’s leading providers of gift cards and
other card-based transaction programs, where as a vice president he was
responsible for developing the mass market sales channel, the SVS
Loyalty Program, as well as leading the partnership marketing team with
responsibility for customer expansion and market development. He
was also on the Blockbuster team that pioneered the first gift card and
developed the Blockbuster Rewards loyalty program.

City National Extends its Elavon Contract

Payment processor Elavon has renewed its marketing alliance for merchant
referral business with City National Bank, a wholly owned subsidiary of
City National Corporation. City National Bank will continue marketing
Elavon’s merchant processing services to new and existing clients. Those
services include credit and debit card processing; Internet and wireless
payment processing; and online reporting management tools. City
National Bank is the wholly owned
subsidiary of City National Corporation and is backed by
$16.3 billion in total assets. The five-year
agreement extends a more than 15-year long relationship between Elavon
and City National. Elavon provides end-to-end payment
processing services to more than one million merchants.

Eltna Completes Tranax Technologies Deal

Eltna Korean holding corporation has completed its acquisition of Tranax
Technologies ATM and self-service terminal developer. The acquisition
agreements stipulate Tranax is now a division of Eltna
Corporation, the latter of which holds companies in ATM system,
components, imaging, design and manufacturing and has served as original
equipment manufacturer for Tranax ATM systems in recent years. Also
under the agreement, Eltna’s CEO will assume the role of Tranax CEO
after a period of transition along with a new CFO provided by the
holding company. Having sold over 100,000 ATMs, Tranax provides
self-service industry design, development, manufacturing and sale of
self-service technology for retail, banking, hospitality, entertainment
and gaming industries.

DCS’ CardWizard Software Enters Ohio

Instant issuer Dynamic Card Solutions has signed OH-based Glass City
Federal Credit Union. DCS will be installing its CardWizard software and
Datacard 150i
embossers in Glass City FCU’s four branch locations throughout Northwest
Ohio: the main branch in Maumee, and three remote branches
including one in Bowling Green and two in Toledo. Glass City FCU’s
Visa instant issue program is expected to go live later this year. DCS’
CardWizard instant issue software can be configured to accommodate
the goals and objectives of most card-issuance environments. CardWizard
is a component-based software application and can instantly issuing
Visa and MasterCard products at the branch level for banks, credit
unions and retailers. The software consists of central and branch level
elements and is installed, along with an in-house data preparation
system, in the issuer’s central computer room, allowing financial
institutions to instantly issue cards to consumers at each branch.

MasterCard Names a DBS Exec to the Board

MasterCard Incorporated has elected Jackson Tai, former vice chairman
and CEO of DBS Group, to its Board of Directors and returns to a full
complement of nine Class A directors and three directors representing
the financial institutions that own MasterCard Class M shares. Tai, 58,
joined DBS Group in July 1999 as Chief Financial Officer, and
subsequently served as President and Chief Operating Officer until his
appointment as CEO. Prior to joining DBS Group, Mr. Tai was a Managing
Director in the Investment Banking Division at J.P. Morgan & Co.
Incorporated, where he served 25 years and held several management
positions in New York, Tokyo and San Francisco.
