Dallas-based Alliance Data Systems reported that first quarter revenue increased 7% to $499.3 million. However, income from continuing operations decreased 3% to $62.7 million. Loyalty Services achieved the strongest quarter in its history delivering $40.9 million in adjusted EBITDA, an increase of 60% from the prior year period. Driving this historic performance was a 30% increase in revenue to $171.8 million in the first quarter due to strong growth in both “AIR MILES” reward miles issued and “AIR MILES” reward miles redeemed just shy of 10%. For first quarter, Epsilon Marketing Services posted solid mid-teens year over year revenue and adjusted EBITDA growth to $115.5 million and $23.6 million, respectively. The segment’s performance was driven by larger commitments from existing clients and stable pricing along with new client ramp-ups including the recently announced major expansion with Citibank’s “ThankYou Network.” Private Label Credit posted results in-line with Company expectations for the first quarter of 2008. Both revenue and adjusted EBITDA declined 5% and 13%, respectively, almost exclusively due to the loss of the Lane Bryant portfolio and, to a lesser degree, a modest increase in credit losses which, due to timing, had yet to be offset by favorable funding costs. A new study has found that 57 million consumers will be using contactless payments by 2013. However, progress is slowed because there isn’t sufficient incentive for merchants and wireless carriers to make essential investments that will enable contactless infrastructure development and the evolution to NFC-based mobile payments. Javelin Research says payment card networks must create acceptance among merchants and migration among wireless carriers with a step-by-step contactless-to-mobile conversion strategy that builds on consumers needs for simplicity, integrated financial management, and control.Details
Direct mail offers sent to current customers increased 17% in 2007 with increases in auto, insurance, telecom and credit card mailers up by 52%, 29%, 22% and 18%, respectively. However, over the same period of time, travel and leisure companies sent 40% of 2007 emails to current customers, while banking and credit card sectors were responsible for another 40%. IL-based Mintel Comperemedia’s media monitoring research says direct mail is holding ground against email as a means of customer communication. However, the estimated number of mailings sent by credit card issuers has dropped another 3% from December, according to the firm. The number of credit card-related mailings sent to consumers topped 900 million during October, but totals have dropped 19% since then. (CF Library 4/3/08)Details
