APACS has released 2006 telephone, Internet banking and e-commerce
figures for 2006 showing that most Internet banking users are 55 or
older, with a 350% increase since 2001. Overall, Internet banking has
risen 174% in the same period, exceeding telephone banking for the first
time. Additionally, online banking customers make an average of 29.2
purchases while non-users make 16.4 per year. Those, however, who use
both telephone and online banking make the most purchases with an average
of 31.7 a year.

BARCLAYCARD ADVERTISING

With its latest television advertising campaign, Barclaycard will be
promoting
the benefits of its interest-free credit card offers and online fraud
protection.
The campaign will be broadcast with comedy actors, including Julian Rhind-
Tutt and Stephen Mangan, portraying compromising situations requiring the
flexibility of Barclycard’s credit card. In the UK, Barclaycard is
comprised of
Barclaycard, Sky Card, Thomas Cook and Argos branded credit cards and
FIRSTPLUS secured lending.

GEMALTO & NXP

Gemalto and NXP Semiconductors have announced their collaboration
for the development of SIM-enabled, Single-Wire-Protocol(SWP) NFC
Solutions. SWP is a specification for a one-wire connection between the
SIM card and the NFC chip in a mobile phone. With this agreement, the
companies aim to define a SIM-based NFC industry standard and
compliancy with telecom operator requirements. The joint solution is
currently
under review for standardization by the European Telecommunications
Standards Institute (ETSI). Gemalto had 2006 annual revenues of 1.7 billion
euro, operations in about 100 countries and over 10,000 employees. NXP is
a semiconductor company founded by Philips more than 50 years ago and
has 37,000 employees in more than 20 countries. NXP posted sales of EUR
5 billion in 2006.

Maybank Singapore will be introducing new card benefits in conjunction
with its conference “Business Opportunities in Malaysia”. The
card benefits are being introduced over the next 3 months with the
intention
of increasing overseas transactions by 30%. With 10 million Singaporeans
predicted to visit Malaysia this year, Maybank will be implementing

Following the acquisition of the pH Group, Experian has conducted
numerous executive changes including the appointment of Tony
Pullen as Managing Director of the Business Information Division.
Pullen was previously employed with Experian’s competitor, Equifax,
as European Strategic Finance Officer and as President and CFO of
the Coca-Cola German Division. Colleagues perceive Pullen’s
experience as vital to his understanding of the market, which is
important in the role to which he has been appointed.

TD CANADA & FACEBOOK

TD Canada has channeled the popularity of the popular social
networking website Facebook by launching an application to assist
roommates split bills, according to Finextra.com. The new application,
called “Split It,” not only helps with bill payment, but also to materialize
the outstanding balances. The application displays the status of
outstanding bills and cannot be seen by fellow users, unless otherwise
dictated by the user. The application helps users manage funds, however,
is not able to process payments online.

FUTURA & MBNA CANADA BANK

The Futura Loyalty Group has signed a distribution agreement with
MBNA Canada bank for the issuance of the “Futura Rewards
Mastercard” credit card. This card will be accepted wherever
MasterCard is accepted and, when used for purchases at Futura
partner retail locations or the “Futura on-line shopping mall”, rewards
double points from both the MBNA card rewards and the retailer.
Cardholders will also earn up to 2% in Futura Rewards on all eligible
net retail purchases for an annual maximum of $750 and no annual
service fee. MBNA provides financial products through out Canada
and is endorsed by nearly 500 organizations.

Small Business Confidence Slips in August

Economic confidence among small business owners declined in August after an uptick July. The downshift was driven by a deteriorating outlook on economic conditions for their businesses, rising insecurity about the U.S. economy and increased cash flow issues. The “Discover Small Business Watch” index dipped to 102.4, down nearly five points from July’s 107.3. Discover found that 36% of small business owners feel that economic conditions for their business are getting better, a significant decrease from 41% in July; 41% said that they have experienced cash flow issues in the last 90 days, an increase over last month’s 35%; and the percentage of business owners spending more on business development in the next six months fell from 38% to 34%.
