Payment Rates Continue to Hover Near 19%

Statistics for all three delinquency buckets, among credit card bonds, remained flat in July as did charge-offs, while yield rose 80 basis points. Monthly payment rates continue to defy gravity posting a strong 18.7% ratio. The payment rate peaked in May and June at 18.9%. According to Standard & Poor’s “U.S. Credit Card Quality Index,” overall consumer attitudes remained upbeat in spite of escalating fuel prices. S&P says U.S. credit card ABS remained healthy in July despite the reported decrease in consumer confidence.

Chase Prepares to Unleash the King Kong Card

Universal and Chase are preparing to pounce on the competition with a King Kong credit card beginning October 1st. Universal Pictures is set to release the King Kong remake, its biggest release of the year, on December 14th. Consumers may pre-register for the new “King Kong Limited Edition Universal Entertainment MasterCard” and earn the opportunity to receive King Kong theatrical updates and sneak-peeks at special Kong merchandise. The new card offers one reward point per dollar on all purchases and two points per dollar at select Universal Studios Theme Parks retail locations. Points may be redeemed for movie tickets, DVDs, gift cards, and Hollywood experiences. Chase will support the launch of the limited edition credit card roll-out with branded direct mail packages as well as online and event marketing.

Intelli-Check Adds a New Board Member

New York-based Intelli-Check has added Jay Maxwell, formerly CIO of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, to its Board of Directors. In his role at AAMVA, Maxwell was responsible for all information technology initiatives, including nationwide, mission-critical IT services used by the AAMVA membership, development of its driver license and ID card specifications and matters pertaining to homeland security. Intelli-Check, Inc. provides technology that assures the authenticity of driver licenses, state issued non-driver and military identification cards used as proof of identity.

HID Technology Sets up Shop in China

Contactless access control card manufacturer HID has established HID
Technology Company Limited in Shenzhen, China. Frost & Sullivan has
estimated the APAC contactless smart card market to grow from 57.6
million units in 2003 to 453 million units in 2009 for a compounded
annual growth rate (CAGR) of 41 percent. HID is a global supplier of
contactless access control cards and readers for the security
industry with over 200 million credentials (cards, fobs and keys) in
use worldwide.

VeriFone Lands a Large Order Under FIMPE Initiative

A major bank supporting the Banks Association of Mexico’s “Electronic Payment Media Infrastructure Fund” has ordered more than 10,000 VeriFone “Vx 610” wireless payment terminals for petroleum stations. The order is a key component in the first phase of an initiative by FIMPE, a joint venture of 15 Mexican banks, to triple the installed base of credit and debit card acceptance systems in Mexico from 150,000 to 450,000 over the next five years. “FIMPE” was formed
by the Banks Association of Mexico to expand the use of electronic
payments in the country. Although more than 34 million debit cards are
in use, Mexican consumers currently use them almost exclusively for ATM
transactions. FIMPE will buy and distribute to retailers more than
300,000 electronic payment systems over the next five years. The first
phase of the initiative is aimed at gas stations and pharmacies.

Most Americans Fail to Grasp Credit Scoring

A new poll has found that that two-thirds of Americans don’t understand the numeric value associated with a good credit score. The study, conducted by Braun Research for Capital One and Consumer Action, revealed that 54% of those surveyed wrongly stated that age is a factor considered in determining credit scores. Also, 23% of consumers have never reviewed their credit report. The research determined that older Americans have a poorer understanding of credit scores compared to younger Americans. Less than 14% of 70+ Americans correctly identified 700 as a “good” score. Capital One and Consumer Action have jointly created the “MoneyWi$e” financial education program.

Travelex UK Sells ATM Business to TRM

Travelex UK Limited has agreed to sell its ATM business to Portland, OR-based TRM. The business includes the ATM division of Travelex as well as Travelex ATMs Limited, a joint venture company with Snax 24 Corporation. TRM will purchase the business, comprised of over 1,100 primarily full placement ATM units, for approximately $78 million. The ATMs are deployed around fuel stations and convenience stores such as TotalFinaElf, Snax 24, Texaco and National Car Parks, as well as other sites including McDonalds and United Cinemas International. TRM says most of the ATMs average 1,000 transactions per month. The acquisition would increase TRM’s presence in the UK to over 7,500 ATM and photocopier locations. The deal is expected to close by year’s end. TRM recently reported that gross sales more than doubled to $61.4 million during the second quarter, compared to 2Q/04.

OPC Expands Calif Card Services to Employer Taxes

Tier Technologies’ Official Payments Corp. has inked a deal to process electronic employer payroll tax deposits for California. The deal represents a major expansion of its services in the state. The new services will enable California employers to pay unemployment insurance, disability insurance and withholding taxes via credit cards. OPC has processed a variety of business and individual electronic tax payments in the state since 1999. The expanded services will take effect early next year. The California Employment Development Department works with over one million California employers to collect payroll taxes and employment records for more than 17 million California workers. The ED handles about $27 billion in employer tax payments. OPC currently provides electronic payment services for the IRS, 25 states, the District of Columbia and more than 1,800 local government clients nationwide.

Paymentech Canada Supports Food for Summer

Paymentech Canada participated in the Daily Bread Food Bank’s “Food for Summer” campaign, collecting 13,621 pounds of non-perishable food items. According to the Daily Bread Food Bank’s 2005 survey, 175,000 people rely on food relief programs each month and the Daily Bread Food Bank helps feed between 80,000 and 100,000 of those who need this type of assistance in the Toronto area. Last year, the Paymentech companies processed 8.5 billion transactions (U.S. and Canada) and $200 billion (U.S.) bankcard volume in 14 currencies.
