Consumer purchase volume on credit cards tapered off during July in Australia to an annual growth rate of 7%, compared to a 16% year-on-year spurt in June. Balances also slowed to a 12% annual growth rate during July, compared to 14% in the previous month, according to CardFlash International. During July, Australians charged A$12.2 billion in purchases on credit cards compared to A$11.4 billion one-year ago. At the end of July, consumers owed A$27.7 billion on credit cards versus A$24.6 billion for July 2003. The ratio of credit card balances to card credit limits was flat compared to one-year ago, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of Australia. One-year ago, consumers had total credit lines of A$65.7 billion. Card credit limits reached A$74.2 billion at the end of July.Details

During August, 11.8 million Canadians, or 64% of all Internet users, visited sites in the banking category. This compares to 8.7 million in May 2003, an increase of 36% in the past 15 months, according to comScore Media Metrix Canada. comScore also found that in the second quarter there was over 960,000 credit card applications initiated online by Canadians. Of the initiated applications, approximately 240,000 total credit card applications were submitted to financial institutions.Details
Egg has received an offer for its savings and online brokerage business, which includes approximately 45,000 savings and investment accounts, from ING Direct France. If the deal goes through, up to 40 of Egg France’s 450 workforce would be re-deployed. Last week, Egg received an offer for the consumer credit part of the French business from Banque Accord. On July 13th the Board of Egg announced that it had begun to
take the necessary steps to withdraw from the French market.
TSYS has completed its new European data center in Knaresborough. The new 53,000 square-foot center replaced the company’s leased data center in Harrogate. TSYS Europe has offices in London and York in the United Kingdom, as well as sales offices in The Netherlands and Spain serving northern and southern Europe, respectively. TSYS currently serves more than 20 million consumer and commercial credit accounts in Europe, a market with 562 million credit and debit cards issued in 2003.Details
Santa Clara University and Seattle Pacific University have selected Moneris to provide credit card processing services through their partner, infiNET. Moneris Solutions is one of North America’s largest electronic transaction processors. The Moneris Solutions and infiNET Service Charge Program enables students at SCU and Seattle Pacific University to pay tuition and other fees using their credit cards. According to Larry C. Wine, president of Moneris Solutions U.S. Group, Moneris and infiNET have created a program that could save universities hundreds of thousands of dollars in budget per year. FL-based Global Axcess has completed its largest ATM acquisition to-date, adding 770 ATM locations for $7 million in cash. The acquisition marks Global Axcess’s single largest revenue acquisition, with roughly $6 million in annual revenues and an estimated $2 million on annual EBITDA. Montreal-based VISA Desjardins has rolled-out a new credit card with the lowest go-to interest rate in the country. The new “Desjardins VISA GOLD Modulo” offers a four-month 0% interest rate on all purchases, cash advances and balance transfers, followed by an 8.4% on-going APR on unpaid balances. The card, which carries an annual fee of $50, also offers access to the Desjardins “BONUSDOLLARS” rewards program. The 8.4% rate is also being offered to holders of the new “VISA Desjardins
Platinum” card, which also offers the Desjardins “BONUSDOLLAR” rewards program along with an annual cash-back program. The “Platinum” card carries an annual fee of $130. VISA Desjardins has 2.6 million cardholders.
The FTC has charged three companies and six individuals with promoting bogus offers of unsecured major credit cards for an advance fee primarily to the Hispanic community. The FTC alleges that Call Center Express Corporation; Abreu Advertising, Inc., doing business as La Familia Group; Pro Line Card LLC; deceptively led consumers to believe that they would receive unsecured VISA or MasterCard credit cards with a guaranteed $2,000 minimum credit limit, for a fee ranging from $149 to $299. However the card issued could only be used to purchase items from the defendant’s own catalogs and Web sites. The complaint also alleges that the defendants refused to provide refunds. The cards involved included: “La Familia Gold Card,” “Destiny MasterCard,” “Advantage Platinum Card” and “Pro Line Card.”Details
Riyad Bank has agreed to deploy 100 Diebold “Opteva” ATMs across the bank’s network. Riyad has 200 branches and more than 650 ATMs. The new ATMs will be rolled out in October. Riyad Bank has purchased a mix of Diebold “Opteva 720” advanced-function lobby ATMs and “Opteva 740” advanced-function, through-the-wall, drive-up ATMs. Both run on “Agilis,” Diebold’s multi-vendor software platform. The Diebold “Opteva” ATMs were sold and supplied to Riyad Bank by Alhamrani Universal Company.Details
