Advanta reported consolidated net income for the third quarter of $6.3 million compared to a net loss of $41.7 million for the third quarter of 2001. Business card profits were $10.2 million. Business card managed receivables grew to $2.3 billion at the end of third quarter as compared to $2 billion one year ago. Charge-offs declined to 8.9% on an annualized basis as compared to 9.0% at the end of the second quarter. Over 90 day delinquencies declined 37 basis points to 2.99% while over 30 day delinquencies increased 7 basis points to 6.66% at the end of the third quarter. Oberthur Card Systems reported third quarter revenue of 103.3 million euros, 7% decline from 3Q/01. Oberthur says the slowdown in smart cards reversed itself during the third quarter as the company experienced a 13.6% increase over second quarter thanks to business in France and the United Kingdom. Oberthur says sales of magnetic stripe cards have stabilized. The decline of 4.3 million euros in sales compared with 3Q/01 is mainly due to the divestment from the memory card business in the USA. Oberthur says the roll out of EMV microprocessor cards has reached a new phase in the UKwith the introduction of the PIN@POS technology that enables retailers to use microprocessor cards with a PIN code at their POS terminals. With a 58% sequential growth and the recent announcement of a 3 three-year contract with Barclaycard, Oberthur says it is in a strong position. VISA confirmed this morning that its cardholders in Japan are the first in the world to download applications to their “VISA smart” cards via the Internet. Sumitomo Mitsui Card has launched the service which allows cardholders to download PC network access functions to “GlobalPlatform” multi-application “VISA smart” cards. Sumitomo expects to issue at least 100,000 such cards within one year. SMCC has been issuing EMV-compliant VISA multi-application smart cards since July. The applications may include identification, loyalty schemes, identity passwords, transit and healthcare information. VISA expects 15 million smart cards to be issued in the Asia Pacific region by the end of 2002.Details
Diebold reported third quarter net income of $44.0 million on revenue of $529.8 million. This compares to third quarter 2001 net income of $14.3 million on revenue of $444.6 million. ATM service revenue grew 13.7%, and 14.0% on a fixed exchange rate basis. Significant orders for the quarter included an ATM order valued at more than $25 million from a large financial institution in Brazil and orders totaling more than $17 million from two large financial institutions in China. Ireland’s CardBASE Technologies to distribute “MASCOT” range of products in
Turkey and other Turkish speaking states. NEXT IT says it sees the market
for CardBASE enabled platforms in Turkey to be a $10 million business
within two years. CardBASE “MASCOT” is a GlobalPlatform compliant solution
for the management of multiple applications including, EMV, CEPS, PKI and
Loyalty. “MASCOT” delivers solutions for issuance, card life cycle
management, key management, personalization and post issuance.
MasterCard and MagTek announced the successful results of the beta
test of a risk management tool to fight skimming in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia
is the first country to deploy “Magneprint” citywide. In collaboration with
four of MasterCard’s member financial institutions in Malaysia: Citibank
Berhad, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad, MBF Cards (Malaysia) Sendirian Berhad and
Southern Bank Berhad, the beta test began in June 2002, and will continue
through December 2002. More than 250 merchants within Kuala Lumpur are
participating in the test. The participating merchant terminals were
retrofitted with Magneprint-capable readers and the terminals were
programmed to send the Magneprint value with the authorization request
message to the card issuer’s host system for verification. To date, a total
of 65,817 cards with Magneprint references are on file and utilized,
resulting in 673,674 scored Magneprint transactions. The beta test has also
successfully detected skimmed cards during the test period.
Atmel Corporation has received the “USB V2.0 Full Speed”
certification for the “AT90SC6464C-USB.” The certification gives customers
the assurance of USB Full-Speed performance when deploying Atmel s USB
secure microcontroller solution on the PC security market addressing
applications such as e-banking, e-commerce, VPN, PKI, secured email and
copy right protection. The dual protocol “AT90SC6464C-USB” secure IC is a
