First Data Corporation has formed First Data (China) Co., Ltd. The new operations, administrative office, and data center will be based in Shanghai. The wholly owned Chinese subsidiary will be fully operational in the first quarter of 2003. First Data will offer a full range of card and merchant processing services, in addition to its “VisionPLUS” software, to card issuing and merchant acquiring companies in China. In China, FDC holds relationships with several leading financial institutions to provide money transfer services through its Western Union subsidiary. In addition, the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China and the Agricultural Bank of China recently chose to use the “VisionPLUS” transaction processing software offered by First Data.Details

Gemplus and Ztango have signed a deal under which the Gemplus
Operation Center will facilitate distribution of Ztango’s ring tones,
screen savers and graphics to carriers utilizing Gemplus’ “OTA”
initialization services. As part of the new Gemplus/Ztango SIM-based media
offering, consumers will have access to more than 3,000 ring tone and
graphic media elements directly from their wireless devices.
Ztango customers include: AT&T Wireless, Motorola, Triton PCS, TeleCorp
PCS, West Virginia Wireless and Telecom Italia Mobile.
By the end of this year Ascom will be deploying a disposable contactless
ticket system for Capri’s public transport system. The ticket systems will
be used in buses and the island’s cable car stations operated by Staiano,
Sippic, and Sippic Funicolare. The system will process up to 100 passengers
in two minutes.
Visa Canada expects online volume exceeding $1 billion this year. Visa
Canada processed three million online transactions during the 2001 holiday
season and expects to process more than five million transactions this
holiday season with an estimated transaction size of $126. Trending studies
show a deliberate and steady growth in online commerce. Statistics Canada
recently estimated that 2.2 million households spent almost $2 billion
shopping on the Internet in 2001 placing 13.4 million orders online.

A new survey of 5,000 small businesses has found that more than half say payment cards have become a more important to their businesses over the past year. The survey, conducted by MasterCard and Thomas Regional Directories, also found that 65% of small industrial businesses say accepting payment cards simplifies collections. About 56% say it eliminates the need for credit checks for new customers and 35% say customers buy more when they use a payment card. Four out of ten agreed that payment cards improves relationships with customers. Forty-five percent of those selling online say customers buy more when using a payment card.Details
A survey of more than 1,000 consumers found that one-fourth of Americans pay at least one bill late each month and that households with children are 75% more likely to miss a payment than those without. The study, conducted by Opinion Research Corporation and the Western Union “SwiftPay” service, revealed nearly 75% of men report that they pay all of their bills on time. On the other hand, only 69% of women report paying their bills on time. People in the West typically pay bills late most often, while those in the Northeast are the least likely. The bill most likely to be paid late is the utility bill.Details
