Whitney Renews Genpass

Genpass Service Solutions, the largest independent ATM maintenance and servicing company in the U.S., announced a three-year servicing contract renewal for Whitney National Bank’s more than 200 ATMs.

Whitney National is a subsidiary of Whitney Holding Company (NASDAQ:WTNY). Genpass Service Solutions is a subsidiary of Genpass Inc., the second largest network ATM driver in the U.S. and owner and operator of the MoneyMaker(SM) and MONEY BELT(R)EFT networks.

Whitney National Bank is the oldest continuously operating bank in New Orleans and a banking industry leader in the Gulf South with $6 billion in assets. The bank maintains 120 branches along the Gulf in the states of Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas, plus a branch on Grand Cayman.

MULTI-STANDARD CONTACTLESS CHIP

Royal Philips Electronics this week introduced a multi-standard
single-chip reader IC for contactless smart cards. The “CL RC623 IC”
operates at 13.56 MHz and fully supports ISO 14443 and ISO 15693 or
Philips’ “MIFARE” and “I.CODE.” Philips’ single chip reader IC offers
system integrators the flexibility to develop interoperable RFID systems
for different high volume reader applications including public transport,
road tolling, access control schemes and supply chain management. The
design of the new reader IC is also pin-to-pin compatible with Philips’
existing reader ICs including the “MIFARE” smart card reader “IC MFRC 500”
and the “I.CODE” smart label reader “IC SLRC 400.” The CL RC632 is
available now and is priced at US $13.5/pcs at volumes of 100k.

FDC & Chase

First Data has signed a multi-year agreement to continue to provide processing services for debit cards issued by JPMorgan Chase Bank. In July, First Data announced that it would produce and mail statements and letters for several retail lines of business within JPMorgan Chase, including credit cards, home finance and auto finance. FDC also participates in a joint venture with JPMorgan Chase called Chase Merchant Services, the largest merchant acquirer in the payments industry. First Data also provides card processing and plastics production for Chase’s credit card business. First Data, which has worked with JPMorgan Chase and its predecessor firms since 1989. FDC processes more than 53 million debit cards for some of the world’s largest debit card issuers.

GM Goodwrench Card

Household announced a new private label credit card partnership with GM Goodwrench. The GM Goodwrench card will offer a credit line for use in purchasing GM service, parts and accessories at GM Goodwrench Service Plus dealers nationwide. Household says the card will engage new and used vehicle owners at the point of sale, thus developing loyalty and long-term relationships with their dealers and customers. In 2003, the card will be made available to all GM dealers. Household announced the Toshiba private label credit card program earlier this week. San Diego-based Cubic Transportation Systems launched an on-bus processing platform designed to integrate automatic fare collection technology, including contactless smart card processing and farebox cash collection. The company also announced it will deliver its first Web-based transit ticketing and customer service function as part of its recently announced contract with the San Diego Metropolitan Transit Development Board and the North County Transit District. The new “Cubic Bus Controller” communicates with the depot computer and/or central computer system via WLAN or an optional wireless communications card to support real-time wireless communications. Additionally, the unit is designed to support a GPS receiver enabling location stamping of automatic fare collection transactions and the support of automated vehicle location. The new Web-based transit ticketing and customer service application, “Nextfare Web Services,” will allow transit consumers to purchase smart cards, transit passes, rides and stored value as well as conduct customer service functions, such as lost card reporting and administering automated transit benefit programs, at any time and from any location with Internet access. Web Services efficiently distributes Internet purchases by electronically delivering the fare product or value to the smart card when a patron presents his or her card to the reader at the gate, vendor, farebox or validator. This functionality is made possible by Cubic’s “Nextfare” terminal architecture, which creates an Internet Protocol addressable PC environment at each fare processing point, whether at the station or on the bus. This electronic delivery feature reduces administration and fulfillment costs for the transit agency and gives transit consumers the convenience of making purchases in near real-time. Off-premises and off-vehicle purchasing gives transit consumers a convenient alternative to standing in line at ticket vending machines or booking offices. It reduces the life cycle costs of fare equipment and improves customer throughput and on-time schedules for the transit agencies.

MasterCard Debit

MasterCard International is cranking up its debit machine in the North American market. MasterCard says the next 24 months promise to be the most significant period in the history of U.S. debit. Financial institutions that represent 50% of debit players will be making critical brand and technology decisions. Therefore MasterCard is leveraging its portfolio of debit brands, including MasterCard, Cirrus and Maestro, and has formed a new team of North American financial industry execute the debit drive. MasterCard recently appointed Thomas Sladowski, Lori Skrobola, and Jerry Sargent, to lead the effort. Sladowski has been named VP and product manager for Cirrus, previously, he was SVP of ATM Channel/Debit Cards at Chase. Skrobola joins MasterCard as vice president and general manager for the Debit Card Marketing Group and will drive cardholder activation and usage through innovative card marketing initiatives. Previously, she was an executive director for CIBC Oppenheimer, responsible for marketing communications. Jerry Sargent, has been named VP, Debit Strategy and Alliance Development. Sargent, who previously was debit product manager, will take on an expanded role of identifying strategic partners and managing alliances for debit. Debit continues to be the fastest growing payment card industry, growing at twice the pace of credit. North America is the world’s largest consumer payments opportunity, accounting for $5.5 trillion in total volume and $400 billion in debit transactions. Analysts project strong debit growth for issuers averaging gains of 20% online and 15% offline in 2002-2003. MasterCard International this week unveiled a new global e-commerce
security solution to tackle Internet transactions. MasterCard’s
“SecureCode” uses MasterCard’s “UCAF” to provide an enhanced payment
guarantee to online merchants by presenting, collecting and passing
cardholder authentication information. Using hidden fields and a merchant
plug-in application that is integrated with merchant Web pages, along with
authentication information generated by issuing financial institutions, the
new service provides explicit evidence of the cardholder’s involvement in a
transaction. Online merchants that support MasterCard “SecureCode” will
benefit from a MasterCard rules change that shifts liability away from the
merchant for chargebacks due to cardholder non-authorization when
SecureCode has been utilized. Chargebacks of this nature currently
represent as much as 84% of all electronic commerce chargebacks. Merchants
may also benefit from an increase in legitimate transactions for existing
and new markets, including cross-border transactions. MasterCard is working
