Aix-en-Provence-based Inside Contactless, formerly known as Inside Technologies, announced the appointment of Stephen Riegel, former Texas Instruments Business Development Manager for the East Coast US as Vice President of Business development for the North American region. Riegel will be in charge of the upcoming office based in the US. He was previously involved in the RFID market as Business Development Manager for Motorola Inc. Inside Contactless is a supplier of contactless chips and readers, offering a range of solutions for emerging markets like transport, access control, payment, identity, and electronic identification.

Dublin0based FreeStar Technologies announced that the Company’s Latin American subsidiary, ePayLatina, secured orders for 20 POS solutions and is following up on over 1000 inquiries
received from small business owners who attended a recent industry exhibition. In association with Bancredito, ePayLatina is offering merchants the opportunity to select from three turnkey, point-of-sale
operating systems, which range in price from US$699 to US$1299. FreeStar also noted that 60 ePayPad units were sold at the technology fair to individuals for personal use on their home computers. The ePayPad is a proprietary card-swipe device that plugs into a personal computer and is engineered to permit a user to complete secure PIN-authenticated ATM and debit card transactions on the Internet.

Vital Renews TransFirst

Vital Processing Service has renewed its contract with TransFirst to provide end-to-end merchant processing services, including authorization, capture, clearing and settlement of payment transactions. Currently reporting annual sales volume of approximately $5 billion, TransFirst is projecting continued processing volume growth of more than 30 percent as it continues to expand its services and market expertise.

Gemplus say it has shipped 500 million SIM cards of the 1.36 billion SIM cards delivered globally to-date. Gemplus says the Asian market is emerging as one of the strongest areas for dominant
SIM growth. While growth in Western Europe is stabilizing, Asia is still on an upward curve. Of the 215 million new subscribers worldwide in 2001, 95 million were based in Asia Pacific. Overall, Gemplus has delivered over three billion smart cards since its beginning in 1988.

Wi-Fi Access

Air travelers can now get “Wi-Fi” Internet access for their personal computers using their credit cards. Info Touch Technologies has become the first Wireless Internet Service Provider to take advantage of the neutral host model offered at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport by iPass and Concourse Communications Group. Travelers through MSP will be able to obtain Wi-Fi wireless high speed Internet access using a daily subscription model, made possible through credit card payments. The new wireless initiative provides affordable public access to an abundance of e-based services at speeds of up to 11 Megabits per second via “Wi-Fi” or 802.11b. Most metropolitan areas offer free “Wi-Fi” access but it is often unreliable.

Alex Tan’s experience also includes senior management positions with MasterCard International, United Overseas Bank, NETS and VISA International. Welcome provides loyalty software for smart cards.

ATM Language Fees

Washington, DC-based Riggs Bank recently charged different fees for using other bank’s ATM card based on the language selection. Riggs customers trying to conduct a non-Riggs ATM transaction through a Riggs ATM were charged $2.25 if they conducted the transaction in English and $1.75 if they conducted the transaction in Spanish. Riggs said the problem was a programming error. The bank raised its ATM access fee from $1.75 to $2.00 on July 1. The bank says all the ATMs have now been properly programmed to charge the same fee for either English or Spanish transactions.

Insider’s Club

Universal Air Travel Plan has launched an enhanced travel insurance benefits program for International Air Transport Association and International Airlines Travel Agent Network ID cardholders. The new “Insider’s Club” program automatically offers $35,000 of travel accident insurance free of charge and covers travel on reduced-rate, industry-free and full-fare tickets. UATP is also offering the new “ATM Protector” enhancement, which provides loss of cash coverage for up to two hours after an ATM transaction. The “ATM Protector” program carries a $12 annual fee. Other “Insider’s Club” benefits include access to UATP’s free of charge, “PassengerAid”, the 24-hour worldwide emergency assistance program offering referral to medical, dental and legal consultation. UATP is also offering IATA and IATAN ID cardholders the option to purchase increased and additional insurance coverage at special rates. Rates begin at $12.54 annually for $200,000 on travel accident insurance, up to $55.00 annually for $1 million of coverage. UATP is also offering several enhanced insurance packages to cover family members and to provide coverage for rental cars and lost baggage. All new and renewed IATA and IATAN accounts will receive a 15% discount off insurance upgrades at enrollment, and cardholders that enroll online with UATP will receive an additional 5% discount. UATP has annual global billings in excess of $7 billion.
