Mondex International has certified Schlumberger Smart Cards & Terminals to manufacture Mondex electronic cash cards with MULTOS(TM) (both V3.4 and V4 versions) – the open, high security, multi-application operating system for smart cards. The broad experience of Schlumberger in related applications, such as credit/debit, ticketing and e-commerce, and its ability to provide compatible point-of-sale and car parking terminals, now places Schlumberger in a unique position to deliver advanced multi-application financial card solutions to customers, such as banks, retailers and urban authorities, etc.
Schlumberger has pioneered the industry’s move towards open smart card solutions through its development of Java-compatible cards, and announced its support for the MULTOS platform in early 1998. The company has also been supplying the Mondex electronic cash for the past few years. This new certification for Mondex-on-MULTOS manufacturing services – in combination with the company’s parallel program to provide compatible terminals and MULTOS applications now gives Schlumberger the green light to offer turnkey solutions to its worldwide customer base.
“The business case for multi-application financial smart cards is now extremely attractive, and there is a pressing need for design and manufacturing resources,” says Gillian Chard, head of Supplier Development at Mondex International. “The global scale of the Schlumberger operation, and its ability to deliver a turnkey package with terminals, adds a new dimension to the Mondex offering, and will be of great support in helping our customers to realize their plans.”
“Mondex has won support worldwide, and the MULTOS platform is now providing operators with the means to build around that function and create powerful multi-application systems,” says Cedric Collomb, product line manager for Financial Cards products at Schlumberger. “This certification allows Schlumberger to greatly expand its Mondex offering, to help customers create successful multi-service financial card solutions.”
MULTOS has been designed to provide a high security platform for multi-application cards. Initially, the Mondex electronic cash will be available on MULTOS cards with 8k or 16k memory, providing extensive space for additional functions.
